Well Vasco is back. I have been away for awhile, health issues. Well the MLS season is over and the best team money can buy in MLS won the whole darn thing. The Cup and the shield, congrats to Bruce and the gang on their victory.
Lets recap some of the 2011 season. We saw two new MLS teams, that came up from USL, Portland which started slow and came on strong, and almost made the playoffs, and Vancouver that came on weak, and got worse. There are some good signs though for the future. The Expansion draft is soon for another USL team coming into the league in Montreal.
We saw Sporting KC, start weak, and open their stadium and win the conference regular season. We saw a DC United make a comeback and fall short behind the heart and soul of DC united in Benny. Houston come on strong at the end, only to fall short in the championship game. Seattle showed that a team can compete on several different front, bring home the US Open cup once again. Real Salt Lake showed that MLS can compete with Mexico, until the end. Dallas showed once again that a college coach can make a huge difference in MLS. LA once again spent lots of cash, and this time actually won the whole darn thing.
Once again MLS had a good season, advanced the league once again, Sweet 16 was good to the American soccer fan. Year 17 is about 100 days away, with some huge issues on the horizon, stadium issues in DC. Can Montreal compete, world cup qualifying and how will that affect MLS. New playoff structure once again. Working towards the end of the single structure.

It is on the back of our Kit, on the collar. DC United the winners of twelve international and domestic trophies, four time winner of MLS cup. The once proud team from our nations capital. The team hasn't made the playoffs in two years. Now the team can't score against the bottom feeders. Two games, zero goals, six goals allowed. The team looks pathetic. the big signing from Australia the striker didn't even play last night. People are getting hurt, people aren't doing their job, which is play respectable futbol. The coach wants to focus on the positive, but no one knows what the positive is. Coach seems to think he is coaching a rec team rather than a professional team. A kick in the arse is what is needed here, not a coddling.
The expansion team is up next with our former coach, and a midfielder we thought wasn't good enough. No one is feeling like we can have a fun evening against this young team. Lots of the faithful are expecting a defeat.

One has to wonder what the front office was thinking this past winter, with the players that were picked up. One has to wonder if anyone has told the coach he isn't coaching high school kids anymore. Focus on the good, please Curt share with us what the good is. Simple article on the website would be nice, or Mr. Goff.
We as the faithful are left with this after this 2nd display of ineptitude:
A: The players are not good enough
B: The front office isn't good enough
C: The coach isn't good enough
D: All of the above

This doesn't even start to mention the pathetic stadium and parking lot situation, with no hopes of a new one. Moving to Baltimore seems to be the only solution for that, and leaving the faithful.

Press Conference

DC United has a press conference scheduled for 1pm tomorrow, to announce Benny heart and Soul of DC United Olsen is coming out of retirement. After watching the team fall flat on their face last week in KC, Benny has decided to come out of retirement. We just need a spark to get back on the right track. Vasco says Benny is being nice, the team needs a huge kick in the arse.
Benny is also quoted as saying he really misses the RFK pitch. Benny will wear #41 this season, so just turn your jerseys around, and cheer Benny and United on to victory Saturday night.

MLS 2010 week 1

Well the season has started, the Union had a bad night while the Sounders flopped around like a fish out of water. Seriously Seattle players when fouled looked like they had run into a brick wall, get a grip guys. It will back fire on you eventually. Colorado won on the road opening night for the first time ever. The Red Bulls won on opening night in front on a half empty stadium. Houston and Dallas tied in front of a few people. Time for this team to move, re-launch something because they are doing a bad job, if they can't get people into the stadium with all of the Hispanics in Texas. Real Salt lake looked great last night, but they were playing San Jose. Columbus beat Toronto, Columbus still looking like the Supporters Cup holders. Los Angeles beat New England, in a dull game in my opinion. Then Vasco's favorite team United laid an egg in Kansas City looking like a pick up team against the World Cup champs. Kansas City isn't that good of a team, some people picking them to finish behind the Union in the eastern conference.
The Fire the coach forums have already started on Big Soccer. Rumors are Emilio wants to come back to MLS, DC maybe you should grab him, along with some defenders.

Youth Soccer

Yesterday was a delayed opening day for my kids. We started at a new club that I had heard good things about, as far away as when I lived in Virginia.
So far we had one day notice on the coaches meeting, and less than two weeks before the season started. When I inquired, about this I was scolded.
So opening day, my oldest had no refs, and after three practices, look about as disorganized as the democrats. My lovely wife looked over at me and said about halfway through the game your last U12 team in Virginia could beat this team. My oldest is a U16. The u6 and u5 and u4 had refs.
My little one the one I think I can still coach after the drunk hit me, has his game afterwards. We had no refs, supposed to, but didn't. I had to fill the other coach in that he was wearing the wrong uniform, and tell another coach that he was on the wrong field, he should be on field 8. We split the teams up for the double game, one coach on one field, the other on the other field, with parents helping. After the my game, I went over to watch the rest of my team finish, and counted 5 v 5, on the field should be 4v4.
Unorganized administrators bread totally unorganized leagues, and Vasco has to ask the question again, why do clubs treat their travel programs like gold, and their rec programs like red headed step children? Without a good rec program your travel program dies. Rec foots the bills in most clubs. Why does USYS let this occur? Why is it when most of your people are rec players, you spend the most time and money and organization on the travel player?

Vasco says that soccer will not take off in America till we create fans of the game. Vasco is still baffled that we have travel players playing the game, but not watching the game on TV much less going to stadiums to watch the game.

Larry, you need to think about this, and Vasco thinks change the direction of the game at the youth level. As for my kids, we will go to another club this spring, one that is better organized and thus a better experience. My children might not grow up to be superstar soccer players, but they will grow up to be fans, and continue what their father has started.
Until then how many kids will be turned off of the sport, because they hear their parents complaining about the experience of being treated like a red headed step child.

US Open cup week, DC United at home vs Seattle Sounders. The defending champ vs a semi finalist from last year, at RFK stadium Wednesday evening at 7:30 pm on Fox soccer channel.

The Lamar Hunt US Open Cup, Lamar Hunt an American hero to us soccer fans.

Watch the game fans. DC will repeat, as the Champs again.

Busy week for Vasco, soccer practice start this week for my oldest, can't coach him any more thanks to a drunk driver. Coaching meeting tonight for my little one, Vasco thinks he can still handle coaching his team, my 25th team.

Everyone knows Vasco is no fan of David Beckham, in fact I honestly despise the man as an over hyped futboller, who has manufactured his fame rather than earn it.
He has chosen to come to the US because the money is good, and he wants to work towards a career after futbol. So he has a work ethic, so he must not be all bad.

Fabio Capello now is saying that his super sub who wants to break the all time record for Caps for the three lions, can't be on the team for 2010, if he is playing in America for an MLS team.
Fabio, Vasco says stick your futbol up your high and mighty ass, and choke on it. That is the biggest crock of crap that Vasco has ever heard of. He can be your super sub while playing in MLS, he can go to Milan and play at a high level, and he can play on your crappy England team in the world cup except your to stupid ass racist butt won't let him.
Coaches are hired to be fired, so Vasco won't say it. Let's just hope you go 0-3 in the group stages, and are let go in disgrace. MLS isn't the best, but neither is your punk ass Europe, Europe just has the money.

Another bad performance in Mexico, thankfully it only happens every four years. Offense is what wins games, we have the talent, so why not use it. When will US soccer ever learn? Interesting discussion on Cirrus about youth soccer last night. Seems everyone knows what we need to do, but no one does it. Could it be that glorified gym teachers are afraid they will lose their income, and those in power at the Federation will lose their power if that were to happen.
Be afraid when their only answer to why is development.

What a game on Sunday, the USA played a fantastic first half on Sunday, and then crumbled in the second half. Vasco has taken lots of flak for rooting for heritage rather than where I live, including insults and a serious infraction bestowed on me at big soccer. Vasco still believes that it was best the US didn't win, because I believe US soccer is doing it wrong and winning Sunday would have set back the US for a generation. You would only know that if you work at the lower end of the ladder.

The US Open Cup third round starts tonight, and ends tomorrow night, and Vasco thought he would take a few predictions to go with it, after going 6-2-1 last week, missing the US/Spain game and LA winning.

Harrisburg on the road at New England, NE lots of injuries, and Harrisburg is bad on the road tough call on this game. With all of the injuries, Vasco sees a Harrisburg upset.
DC over Ocean City NJ Barons, the last remaining PDL team.
Wilmington at home over Chicago.
Columbus at Rochester, Rochester has only played two home games this year without a win. Columbus rolls.
Charleston at home will win versus Chivas

Soccer in the United States, a growing majority. I am still fascinated with the number of people drinking the USSF kool aid, and handing over their money.

SUM is doing the Super Liga again, a mini tournament between Mexico and MLS. The lesser rans of last years league tournament, Some of the games are good, as long as you don't think the tournament is awesome, then you should be good.

United States Men's national team, let's face it boys and girls we can smell the stink they are leaving in Africa all the way back here in the states. Vasco wonders why the fans get up in arms when the US stinks up a tournament? My guess, the Kool aid, because lets face it, the US isn't that good.

The US cannot play with the big boys, of Europe and South America. What has the US done since 2002. Nothing, 1 point in 06. we match New Zealand.

Let's face it, for the US to become a soccer nation, things must change. First people must be fans, just because people play doesn't make them fans. When the country becomes fans, then the players will get better. Then the United States might be able to start hanging with the big boys.

Sunil, it is time to change the USSF plans, ideas. Quit robbing the US of the ability to enjoy the beautiful game. After all ESPN gets it, USA v Egypt on the Deuce, while the Brasil v Italy game is on the original 2pm today.

While the US looks for a new coach, and what plan they can drop millions down the drain on, after another failure. Brasil will be celebrating another FIFA trophy, cause that is what we do.

MLS Week 13

Vasco wanted to do Power rankings this year, but didn't want to start at the beginning of the season, week seven is in the books now, and Vasco is debuting his MLS Power Rankings.
Vasco is thinking though that this will not be a weekly event.

# 1 Chivas is the class of the league so far, 6-1-1
# 2 Seattle is the biggest surprise so far, 4-2-1
Do they know they are an expansion team
#3 DC United is back from the brink 3-1-3
#4 Chicago is still undefeated at 2-0-5
#5 Toronto is still up and down at 3-2-3
#6 Colorado is surprising some at 3-2-2
#7 Real Salt Lake is great at home 3-3-0
#8 Kansas City is a good home team 3-3-1
#9 Houston is a slow starter at 2-2-2
#10 New England injuries have hurt 2-2-2
#11 Columbus was 08 a fluke 0-2-5

Think what you want, I know they are different than some others, who are doing them. This is Vasco's thoughts and we shall see. 52 games in the books so far this year, 17 ties so far, a rounded 33%, that really needs to improve. To many teams playing for a tie, look at the WPS the women don't play for ties they play hard till the final whistle.

MLS week 7

Week seven brings us seven games to watch and ponder. Last week, Vasco was 6-2-2, only losing with Toronto's two home game victories. Toronto is good at home, Vasco has learned his lesson. So Vasco is 22-10-14 on the year so far, not so bad, but not great either.

Congrats to Seattle with a 4-1 pasting of Real Salt Lake in the US Open play in game, and NY beating San Jose last night 2-1.

Vasco is starting to get warm like the weather, so look forward to watching the games in person or on TV. Vasco says to Comcast be serious Hockey over Soccer, remember when Soccer was the flagship. I am a huge Penguins fan, but Vasco would rather watch DC play.

Toronto needs a new heach coach

It has finally come to this, US Soccer and their insane officiating have driven a coach to quit in the middle of a season and probably leave the continent. John Carver has up and quit after abdicating the bench Wednesday evening, after being fined for having a go at the refs, after what he thought was a poorly officiated game.

Sunil, Vasco is calling you out, maybe it is time to start upgrading the consistency of your refs, so that us coaches who work our butts off to prepare a team, don't have to get high blood pressure because of a bad call, perceived or not. This isn't an amateur game at this level, yes at the games with soccer moms, we shouldn't yell at the refs they are learning, but at the MLS level it can cost a coach their lively hood, and the players, fans and coaches deserve better than what they are getting. Sunil, you are the president get to work, and make us proud, finally.

Well a 2-2-3 week, sends Vasco to 16-8-12 on the season.
The last week of the month gives us nine games this week, Houston has the bye week, and four teams play twice this week, and a bonus US Open cup play in game too, between Dallas and the defending champion DC United.

European failure

Sven the great European coach, coach of England, and Man City, came to little ole Concacaf, and took the reins of Mexico. Amazingly he was a complete failure, and I thought all Europeans were so futbol great. Little ole Concacaf can't hold Europe' s jock. Let' s face it Mexico is in shambles, they were in bad shape before Sven, but he has left them in shambles, and now the USA is the class of the region. Don't forget about Costa Rica, but they did lose to Mexico last week.
Let's celebrate another European failure on our continent, while Sven doesn't represent the whole continent, his Swedish heritage and English coaching, make it even sweeter now that he is a failure in little ole Concacaf.

Seattle Sounders play at Toronto today at 4pm on FSC. Looks like they will be without Freddy Montero, sadly there appears to be allegations of a sexual assault against him. A lady called the police and said she thought he was stalking her, and she was afraid because he assaulted her on March 22, and now reports that he did it on the 15th as well. Police have determined he wasn't stalking her, just attending a high school soccer game. Vasco has read the news articles and the story sounds weird to Vasco. Assault two weeks in a row??? Vasco doesn't want to make lite of it but it sounds weird. Let's hope that the police can bring this to a conclusion this week, so that everyone can move on. The Seattle fans, MLS fans, and Freddy, if there is evidence charge him and try him, if there isn't, then let get back to thrilling the fans.
Sadly enough athletes have assaulted women, and sadly enough false accusations for money have occurred to make the public doubtful, both must change.

On a personal note this is Vasco's 100 post ever for this blog, didn't post a whole lot last year due to circumstances, but will be more active in 09. Congrats to Robbie Finley and his hat trick Thursday night. congrats to Jose Altidore with his hat trick Wednesday evening, now maybe just maybe he can get playing time in Europe. After all we all know Concacaf is better than Europe, Sven proved it.

MLS week 3

Well the USA face Trinidad tonight. Should be an easy victory tonight, but then so should last Saturday night.
Another 4-1-2 week, to close out March 8-2-4.
MLS starts off this week on Thursday evening, Vasco so enjoys a good Thursday night game, Columbus at RSL should be a good game. Columbus is fit to be tied, and RSL's home opener.
RSL wins this one in the cold mountains of Utah.
Saturday, Seattle travels to Toronto which should tells us how good the Sounders really are.
Vasco says they are good, but lose this one in a really good game, glad it is on FSC 4pm est.
New England over Dallas, FC looks so week this year.
DC United over Houston, Emilo scores in bunches.

Womens Professional Soccer

Today is the day Womens Professional Soccer Part deux. The Washington Freedom are here again to help kick off the league against the Los Angles Sol. Like we talked in other posts, the Freedom won the first ever WUSA game 1-0 vs the Bay Area Cyberrays.

I thought I might look back a little with the WUSA, First season the best record and the champions were the Cyberrays, the second season the Carolina Courage had the best record and they were the champs as well. the third season Atlanta had the best record and the Freedom were the champions. The Freedom and the Boston Breakers have the same name and logo as before, and the little known fact is that the Freedom never really went away, they have been playing in the USL women's division for all of these years. The Atlanta Beat were the best overall team in the three years of the league reaching the championship game twice and making the playoffs all four years.

This new league has a really messed up playoff system. The season champion gets a bye to the championship game and it is at home, while the 2nd place team plays the 5th place team, and the 3rd and 4th place team play each other, the winners playing against each other for the right to get to the championship game. Think the top team will have issues winning the game after a month off, Vasco thinks so.

Vasco thinks that the Sky Blue, Freedom or the FC Gold Pride would have to be the front runners with their ties to the second level professional soccer leagues. The Sol have the best womens player in the World today, so you can't count them out. St Louis has Hope Solo, so you have to think they could be a playoff team. Chicago seems to be the most organized, and Boston has Kristine Lilly. Vasco looks for the games to be competitive and great for the youngsters to watch and learn.

Major League Soccer and the Seattle Sounders, got the season off to a fine start this week. Vancouver granted an expansion franchise, The Seattle dominates and destroys the expansion team from NY, ok sorry, but they played like one. Then Friday Don goes down the road and awards another expansion franchise for Portland. Eight teen teams and counting now. Philadelphia starts next year then Vancouver and Portland in 2011.
The only thing better that could happen to MLS is David stays in Italy,oh ya, that is happening. They received money for Davy boy to stay away, this is awesome. Drew Carey made the rounds and called LA an expansion team. Didn't realize Drew was that up to date on his soccer. Finally a celebrity that loves soccer, and has put his money where is mouth is. Gotta love it.

Well my predictions last year sucked to put it mildly, so I am not going to make detailed descriptions. Playoff teams from the west, RSL, Houston and Seattle. From the east, Columbus, NY, DC, Chicago and Toronto. Finals Columbus and DC. I really think bringing Christian back will work, better than all five of those Argentinians combined. Yes I see DC coming out of the West as the 5th place team. I see a slow start and coming on in October. Columbus will be able to pick up where they left off year. The winner, one for the thumb.

Freddy Montero just might be the steal of the off season, although hard to argue with Kasey Keller as well. Look for Emilio to resurface again this year, although twelve goals isn't bad, now that he will be getting some service once again from Christian, and defenses will have to worry about the DC offense again.

Bennie is back, Vasco wishes the new dad a wonderful 2009 season, MLS best eleven, and another hat trick against NY this year. Last year proved you are United's MVP and the reason why you are the only non Brasilian that I have a jersey of. I see a coaching career in your future, but let's not make it to soon, next decade would be fine.

Now if the Philadelphia franchise would just announce the crummy name they are going to go with, maybe I could add to my MLS jersey collection. Vasco is tired of the AC, FC, crap this is America we have brains, oh wait we elected Obama as president, maybe we don't. Americans like nicknames, and AC, FC don't work. Do you want to make this a soccer nation, or just service the hard core fans? Just my opinion. Lets go see United play, or lets go see FC play, which one works for you?

Enjoy tonight's FSC doubleheader, I know I will, and tomorrow a DC win, and Jamie becomes the first 100/100 man in MLS history. 99 assists and counting. Probably the finest player to ever play in MLS, no disrespect El Diablo, Jamie has been part of all twelve trophies that DC has won. I love the Trophy case section on the new DC United website.

Enjoy the season, and remember give the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup some respect, MLS and the fans. Without Lamar Hunt we wouldn't have a league in this country, no disrespect USL, I do enjoy watching your teams as well. Watching an Open Cup game at the lower levels is an exciting game, MLS needs to start showing the Trophy the respect it deserves.

Tomorrow is the finals for 2008 for MLS soccer. Columbus the supporters shield winner vs the Energy Drink and the under 500 eighth place team.
NY has been playing well during the playoff, but hopefully Columbus shows it's dominance in 2008 and win its first supporters shield. Columbus was the best team this year, and deserves it's first Cup. All that said it is nice to see two teams that have never been there before.

LA Circus, Landon has a loan agreement, Landon doesn't have a loan agreement. Please LA a circus isn't good for any team. You have a good coach, he will build a decent team, let them both go. David wasn't nice having you around, Landon go finally prove to all of us that yes you can be the best. It is the only way you will cement your legacy in US soccer. There are to many doubters and this is the only way to shut them down. Vasco is included in those doubters, and would love to see himself proven wrong. I would love to see a 2010 final USA v Brasil with Landon leading the way. To quote Ric Flair, to be the man you have to beat the man, and playing along side that motley crew of a team, isn't improving your skill at all.

The nightmare is over DC United signed a handful of South Americans this year, and even Vasco thought is was a great idea. Turns out it wasn't, Gallardo was an excellent player when he wasn't hurt. Problem is he was hurt more often than not. The defenders were lousy, and the new goalkeeper stunk, he isn't South American. Let's hope that this off season is better than last. They decided to keep Tommy on as coach, let's all hope that wasn't the wrong decision, Vasco thinks it is. Defense has to be a priority, and with a twenty man senior roster this year, hopefully a better showing in the CONCACAF championship in the up coming year for a proud team. Another year like this one and the sentence will change to once proud team.

David is going to Italy during the off season because he wants to play for England. He wants to keep in shape so that he can be picked for the squad and play ten minutes a game for England.
He wants to play in South Africa for World Cup 2010. England sucks, so they are a perfect match.

Vasco says cool, Don't let the door hit you in the Arse on the way out of the USA. Galaxy sell the chump and move on, what has he done for you, nothing. You haven't made the playoffs in either year that he has been here, he plays like a have interested player. All he seems worried about is the paycheck and playing for England. Hell if he cared about the team, he would have declined the last call up, and went to Colorado to try to get the team in the playoffs. Your team has become the laughing stock of the league.

It is sad the MLS has been played like this and a once proud team has almost single handily been ruined by a chump from England. He is not the great player that his publicity team has made him to be. Vasco says the chump should go home to Europe and never come back.

Please Galaxy management, please grow a pair and sell him to whatever team will take him and get him out of the USA. Please Vasco implores you for the sake of MLS and American soccer.
Let him go destroy England and whatever club stupid enough to take him.

Time for a Change

The once proud DC United team, has now went almost four and a half games without scoring. Has went 16-21-4 this season. With six games to go before the season is put out of its misery, Three MLS and Three CCL games. They laid an egg in superliga losing all three, they have laid an egg in the CCL so far losing all three. The only competition they plaid well in was the US Open cup winning that honorable tournament, and getting a CCL berth next year. While most other MLS team punted that tournament.

We are now punting the CCL, so we can try to make the MLS playoffs, with games left against Houston, New England and Supporters shield winners Columbus. The way the team is playing most of us would be surprised to see them earn one point from those three games. After last night's debacle and the obvious crap on the pitch, it is obvious that Tommy has now not only screwed up the team, but he has lost the team as well. Players arguing on the field, players admitting in post game interview they didn't know what they were supposed to do. Who is kidding me.

DC United is the greatest Futebol team in the United States, has enjoyed more success outside the US than any other team in the United States. It is time to go out and find a coach that can carry on the "Tradition" that is DC United.

1-7-2 in the last ten, and that win was against a USL team in the Open Cup final, We started the season 4-5-1. The team wasn't prepared to start the season, and we certainly not closing the season well at all. While Tommy is at fault for the way this team is prepared. Kevin and Dave also hold a lot of responsibility here as well. After all they are the team that signed all of these players. How do you sign a DP who can't stay healthy?

In the words of the presidential candidates we need change in DC, and Congress and the White House isn't the only thing in DC that needs changing.

This isn't the tradition that DC is all about. Time to get back to what DC is all about.

Redemption

I know I promised I wouldn't watch or care about the women's nation team of the US till the team was cleared of the punks.

I was watching the Brasilian women's team, they just happened to be outplaying the US team once again. Hope Solo, remember her, kicked off of the team for talking, she won gold this week for the women's national team. Seems the Brasilian ladies outplayed the US ladies, and a certain keeper won the game in OT for the Americans.

Making several key saves and stops, in a pressure packed Olympic gold medal game. Vasco feels that vindication is hers. Greg and Abby and Kristine, I hope your plate of crow was seasoned tasty for you.

The Brasilian ladies have now finished second in the last three tournaments, two Olympics and one world cup. I have to think they are frustrated. I do know one member of past teams, and I know they feel they are on the cusp of winning. OT in two of those tournaments outplaying the Americans, only to lose. Might be time for the Federation to start kicking up some cash to get these ladies playing over the next three years. Even if it is only in the WPS. Might help spice up the league.

As for the Americans they will still have this hanging over them till at least after the next world cup, Especially when Hope leads her WPS team to a championship, Hopefully Greg Ryan will never resurface anywhere in the US ever again. At least not near my route one. US soccer is US soccer so I assume he will, and we wonder why the men's team can't go anywhere. We are left to say at least we aren't Canada.

Let's Hope that the women's team lives by the motto, at least we got Hope going forward. They owe her big time for not telling them to stick it up their A**, and go play in Sweden.

Yes it was a Brasilian, Pretinha. Washington Freedom won that first game 1-0 over the Bay Area Cyberrays. Bay area went on to win the first championship and then changed their name to San Jose. The Goal was scored on a PK.

The LA LA Circus

Alexi Lalas was finally canned, and Rudd Guilt resigned and once again the Circus that is the LA Galaxy is shining more than the product on the field.
MLS flagship team, (NOT) is once again shining more than Barnum and Bailey's, now Bruce Arena wants to be the ringmaster, and reports are that he has been hired to be the ringmaster.

Vasco says OMG, Bruce wants the job. Bruce wants to coach this team, this team that has no talent after their top two. Landy cakes wants to go to England, he seems to be the only one though, since there have been no offers. Davey boy has to be wondering how he gets paid so much money in retirement. Why does Bruce want to coach a team that is so dysfunctional?

Why would the Galaxy want Bruce as their coach, and man that failed in his last job, and failed miserably in World Cup 06, and a man who blames everyone else for his failings because he is the great Bruce Arena so it can't be his fault. A man that has to drive a convertible because his head is so big.

Vasco thinks we are going to be entertained in the coming year or so, because this could be better than Barnum and Bailey's. OLE

DC United

DC takes off the month of July from MLS games, except now they have the makeup game with Houston three days after the Super Liga game in DC. Good choice on the makeup date.

Great to see Ben Olsen play last Sunday, the standing ovation that he received when entering the game shows how the fans feel about him. He is the heart and soul of the team, and definitely is on the mount Rushmore for DC United, along with Marco and Jamie. The Fourth spot is open still, but Emilio is making a play for the fourth spot. He needs several more years though to make it.

I am so glad to see that DC is taking the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup seriously this year. Lamar gave so much of his time and money to soccer in the US, he deserves for MLS to take the tournament seriously. Without Lamar Hunt, I think it is safe to say that there wouldn't be a professional league in the United States. DC is in the quarters this week against the Fire, the four time champions. After watching the Fire last night, and the sudden downward spiral they are in, it looks to me DC buckles down and plays their game they will make it to the semis.

Vamos United.

Super Liga, I am looking forward to this this year, guessing DC will get four home games out of this, I haven't heard where the final is yet. DC is on a roll 6-0-1 in their last seven, I am looking for them to take the Super Liga trophy this year, to become the first MLS team to win the tournament. Once again becoming the first MLS team to win something.

All in all as we face the dog days of summer, it is looking good for DC and two more additions to their trophy case.

As for Benny, lets hope this isn't a swan song Benny was really hitting his stride last year, and it would be a shame after his near miraculous recoveries, to get shut down now.

Steven Goff is reporting on his blog that a Mexican team Morelia was in town scouting Emilio last night. What a night it was for Emilio scoring his first MLS hat trick. While lots of us wanted Emilio run out of town a month ago, the last 4 games have proven one thing; as Emilio goes so does DC United. Four games six goals, one hat trick, and a 3-0-1 record. DC is back in a playoff position.
Luciano Emilio needs to stay, the only thing DC needs to figure out is how to cure his slumps quicker. I predicted at the beginning of the season Luciano might be the MLS first player ever to 30 goals. Seventeen games left, it won't happen but at this pace, that would be twenty five goals to go with the seven he already has.
Vasco says let's get this man's family here to the United States of America, and keep him happy. Luciano Emilio is a striker that MLS hasn't seen before, ruthless in the box, and Futbol is his game, his life. DC has made him a designated player, just barely. Vasco is suggesting maybe a one year contract extension through 2010. That will lockup up our two designated player slots. Vasco is still hoping for three straight MLS Cups.

On a side note, has MLS ever had two players score a hat trick on the same day? Edson scored a hat as well last night, his second of the year. Vasco was thrilled too, as I have both of them on my fantasy team, and I started both of them this week.

VIVA Luciano

First Third

The first third of the season is over now that everyone has played ten games, and then some, I have been busy at work and stuff.

Biggest surprise of the season, the Eastern Conference, the first place western conference team would only be in fifth place in the East. Team wise it has to be DC United at 3-7 DC has not lived upped to the hype and tradition that is DC United.
New England, Chicago and Columbus are 6-3-1 with 19 points tied for first place. For me New England and Columbus are a surprise to Vasco, Chicago was expected in some ways. New York is 4-3-3 fifth in the full table, about the same as normal except for the over 500 part. Kansas City was expected to be among the elite once again, but is 3-4-3 on the season one of the bottom feeders in the league after a fast start. Toronto has been a surprise after an awful start of 0-2; they looked bad against DC the second game of the season. They are 5-1-2 since and shaking off the expansion label.

Colorado tops the western conference with a 5-5 record. Still one of the biggest amazements in MLS, Colorado once again looks like world-beaters one week, and a rec team another week. LA and Chivas come in with 14 points, LA a surprise after the last two seasons, Chivas a surprise unless you were reading their injury list. FC Dallas started off fast too, and cratered since having fired their coach, winning the pools. Still looking to hire a coach as well, although SMU might be next in line. Houston started like a rec team, but has improved since to eleven points. RSL has stormed out of the gates, well like RSL twelfth in the league with 11 points too. Will we look back several years from now and compare them to Tampa Bay. San Jose is back in the league once again, and up to ten points in ten games. Playing like an expansion team.

Landon Donovan leads the league with nine goals; Jon Busch has been the best keeper in MLS the first third of the season. Looking like the goalie of old before the two torn ACL’s. Luciano Emilio the 2007 league MVP has looked anything but a defending 20-goal scorer and league MVP, much like DC United the two-time defending Supporter Shield winners.

Hope you are enjoying Euro 2008, Vasco is happy to not see England, and I am enjoying watching Portugal, Spain and Holland as they kick some butt. Thankfully Greece and their style of play are not being rewarded this time around. Yes even Vasco can enjoy some of Euro 2008, although being stranded in Virginia without a TV probably helped. Enjoy the US Open Cup renamed after Lamar Hunt. More on this later.

I didn't think I would see it on Saturday night. Emilio cleans up and gets the game winner.

The biggest question though is what the heck was Edu thinking a two handed push from behind in the box. Then had to nerve to complain. He should have been red carded for that, but American refs being what they are we should just be glad he called for the PK.

I was happy with the effort, United players seemed to actually care tonight, which I hadn't seen the last few times out. Peralata got a good goal because he kept his eye on the ball, I can't count how many times I have seen that play go bad. Of course the PK, thank you Edu, he really should get his US soccer players association card pulled for that one, it was so first year rec player bad.
Emilio cleaning up by crashing the net on the play, and putting the ball in the net, after doing it before on an offsides call. Vasco thinks that this is the end of the slump for both Emilio and the team. Twenty five points in the next ten games.

Brasil is coming to town. May 31st in Seattle vs Canada, June 6th in Boston vs Venezuela. While I understand the trip to Boston I do not understand the trip to Seattle. Maybe there are more Portuguese people in Seattle than I am aware of.

World Cup qualifying starts next month in South America, with Brasil taking on Paraguay way on the 15th, and home on the 18th vs Argentina. Wow get so kick some Argentine butt right off of the bat.

Can you guess Vasco's predictions, undefeated in cup qualifying, and a Victory in 2010, adding the sixth star.

Well that is why predictions are just that, a shot in the dark. Sigi and Columbus are 6-1-1, and were my prediction for first Coach fired of the MLS season. Speaking of predictions, do you really think Emilio is going to score 30 this year, ya me neither.

Steve Morrow and FC Dallas became the first to cut the rope today when Mr. Morrow had the chair kicked out from underneath him. A horrible 5-1 defeat and falling out of the playoff race was the end. Like Jim Morrison said "This is the end, my only Friend the End" Vasco feels that FC has under achieved under Morrow. Ruiz was horrible last year, and with that demon being exercise and Kenny Cooper coming back from the broken leg, this team was set to do well his year. Best Wishes to you Steve, it might have been a real quick trigger.
One question though, what has Dallas ever won, to say their standard of excellence?

Who is next to go. My guess is DC United, if DC doesn't get a least four points this week, Tommy is out. The way DC is playing Vasco thinks DC would be lucky to get one point. Tommy will make it to Thursday night May 29th and the game v New England. Vasco feels though that when the sun goes down on May 30th, Tommy will be the newest ex coach of the MLS standard bearer. Then again once you are hired the days are numbered till you become the ex-coach.

Yes, I said it the MLS standard bearer, yes you know it too Galaxy fans. That being said Saturday night was a disgrace, a huge disgrace although the RSL game was even worse.
It is time for the players to either step up to the plate and perform, like the kit you are wearing deserves or go the hell home. Play up to the standard the your forefathers set for you or go the hell home.

Maybe a little rough, but the team I have been watching has been pathetic, truly pathetic. Even the 2000-2002 versions of DC United weren't this bad.

The pride of American Soccer DC United is facing that and facing that the hard way now at 2-5. Fred is injured and Benny is out, and no one is picking up the slack. Thursday nights game was a pathetic display from a once proud team. That now makes two pathetic displays in a row.
We look like a freaking expansion team out their. One of my favorites Emilio hasn't done squat all year, and somehow got a bonus for last years performance. Last year was great, how about showing us something this year, Emilio. I bought a jersey with your name on it for my son, my other son chose Fred, so we could enjoy our Brasilian heritage even more. Fred is hurt, Emilio is out there taking up space. No one is out there playing for their honor and glory let alone the teams glory and honor. This team's crest is the most honored and prestigious in American soccer and quiet frankly this team is disrespecting and dishonoring it. Five new players from South America this season, on paper it looked great, exciting soccer at RFK. On the pitch it has been a twilight zone episode, professional players that suddenly can't play better than REC players.
Vasco says let this be your wake up call DC United, or do the right thing and retire, in June when we can restock the roster.

Time to wake up, 2008 version of DC United honor yourselves and the badge. Benny isn't their to kick some butts awake. Don't make the fans come do it for him.

If You Have Nothing Good to Say

Yes, Vasco's parents taught him that, so I have been quiet. After last night's games I had to say something. LAST FREAKING PLACE, and Columbus is at the top not eastern conference, that is MLS. Everyone keeps talking about the Concacaf hangover, what 1-3-0 in MLS play, with a minus 4 goal difference. 2-1-1 in Concacaf +4 goal difference. Toss out the 5-1 victory against Harbor View and the 4-1 victory against Toronto, and that makes us 1-4-1 minus 9. The defense looks worse than some Recreational teams I have seen and the offense looks like they have never played the game before. Since when is shooting at someone a way to score goals. Silly me I always thought is was dribble, pass, shoot at the goal.
OK the Crew came out and played a 5-2-2-1, and went into a 7-2-1 to start the second half, and the final 15 minutes it looked like they were playing a 9-0-1. Yes, it is tough to score against a team playing crappy soccer like that. Sad part about it, is that Sigi isn't embarrassed, he is happy to be play ugly soccer winning or losing. All that being said we have solved those issues in the past, Columbus isn't the first MLS team to play that sort of game, sadly won't be the last either. We got rid of some proven talent to pick up these guys, and it isn't looking good. Not looking good at all, it isn't looking like a hangover, it is looking like a lack of talent and leadership. The injury to Ben Olsen is looking to loom large over this season, and yes Benny had his best MLS season last year. Benny is turning 31 next month, and with all of the work on his ankles he isn't going to be around in 4 years. So where is the guy to step up to plate? Nowhere that I can see, and for a team as proud and with such a great history, that is sad. If there is one team in MLS that it is an honor to play for it is MLS, sorry Landon it isn't your team, no matter what you say. LA is more of a laughing stock, than anything else.
Kevin wheeling and dealing isn't always the way to go, and Tommy this will be the time for you to make your mark as a coach, and to stop whining about the schedule. With the team playing this way and the crappy concession problem the stadium has, this could be a huge problem.
The Badge is counting on you both, the Fans are counting on you both, the team's honor, tradition and history is counting on you both. Do you two have the ability to right the ship?

One of the biggest complaints and biggest points Eurosnobs make is that MLS teams don't show up for every game. Well this week will be fuel for the Eurosnobs fire. Wednesday night DC showed up and beat the best club team in Concacaf, 2-1 they outplayed them and earned a victory. Lost the series but earned a victory none the less.
So what happens last night, the DC United uniforms showed last night in Utah, and let easily one of the worst teams in Concacaf run all over those uniforms for a 4-0 victory. A 4-0 butt kicking for the ages, a game that fans are saying just might be the worst game DC United has ever played in their thirteen year history. That a championship team does not play like this ever. A team capable of this horror, can never ever win a trophy/championship.
If this isn't the fuel to a Eurosnobs fire then there never will be fuel and the Eurosnobs are just that eurosnobs.
Don Garber the commissioner of the MLS said this past week said that the teams need to start showing up for international games. Hello, Is this worrying about the thorn in someones leg, when you just had your leg chopped off. Don, can Vasco call you Don, how about worrying about your fans and start getting on your players to show up for every game.
If your fans don't feel your team will show up for every game, then why should they show up for every game, and spend their hard earned money. Example last Saturday I went to the home opener of DC United against Toronto. I showed up spend a $100 for 4 tickets, my brother spent a $100 for 4 tickets. We both traveled over a hundred miles, he from Pennsylvania and I from Delaware, we both spent $12 to park. We both had to wait almost an hour in line to get food at the concession stand because the concession people sucked so bad, and ended up missing almost 40 minutes of the game along with the entire halftime to feed our kids. He spent around $30 bucks at the souvenir stand and I $137. Not to mention that it is a eight hour round trip to make sure I am their on time. Now Vasco might not be the norm, but damn I spend a lot of time and money supporting my team, I do not think it is to much to ask them to show up on game night. They are only playing 45-50 nights per year. I plan my Saturday's around their schedule. They only thing that really bumps them is my kid's games.
I guess since my team can't show up on game night, then I am going to have to support them from my couch via the cable TV, no I won't pay extra for MLSlive or Direct Kick that costs extra, and I don't need to spend extra on them if they can't show up five times in fifteen days to play a game. Yes I know it is a physical game. Last week I worked seven days for a total of over sixty hours, I showed up for those days and worked hard. I put off other things to make sure I was 100% when I arrived at work. In case your wondering five of those games are over now, they won 2 by a combined total of 6-2 and lost 3 by a total of 8-0. Columbus is next on the list Thursday evening on ESPN. Columbus scored 4 goals last night against Chivas, before the two red cards were issued.

All this being said The drive for six trophies is still on after ending their pursuit of one this week.
I am reminded of a game in the NHL back in the early 80's, for those of you who are hockey fans you would remember that was the Gretzky and Edmonton Oilers who went to 5 straight NHL championship rounds losing the first and winning the next four. The last game of a long road trip the went to New Jersey a pathetic team back then managing 40-50 points a year. New Jersey won 13-0 over the reigning NHL champions and the team that won the championship that year as well.
All is not lost but MLS better take note that the players better show up and play game in and game out, or their just might be more fans watching from the TV. Instead of enjoying the games in person. After all I get to enjoy my kids games in person ever week, why pay a ton of money to get frustrated with the our pro team. When I can just stay home and invest two hours and get some stuff accomplished.
This is Vasco's opinion, I am guessing their are a few of you that might be saying I have a point.

Greatest day of the year

It is the greatest day of the year, The home opener, better if the home opener is the first game too. This year it isn't though, and we have played three Concacaf tournment games too.
DC United has it's MLS Home Opener today, looks like the rain is going to hold off. Dads look at their kids with a little twinkle in their eye, because we know there are several months of special moments to spend with their children. We have several tournaments going on this summer, Olympics both the Men and Women teams are involved. Brasil and USA are going for the gold. Think Green and Gold all the way, go Marta. US Open Cup, Super Liga, MLS Cup, Concacaf Champions cup, two times, MLS Reserve League and hopefully ending with a DC United win in the Club World championship.
I get to spend the summer with my kids in the warm weather, watching MLS and USL teams in person and watching all of these tournaments on TV, listening to my son root for the black and red, white and red or honestly analyze the team when there is no red involved. Yes he is only five. That is what happens when you have brasilian blood, and your first soccer team has Red jerseys.
Such a magical day for all MLS soccer supporters the black hole is now closed and the games have begun. Let Parents and children rejoice and share those magical moments, Saturday and Thursday nights week in and week out. Hopefully for many soccer dads some magical moments with soccer mom as well, of course after the games. We await our morning fix from Goff, Ives and the Soccer Daily to find out what is going on around the league. You just got to love it!
Truely the greatest day of the year.

I am not a Beckham supporter, in fact the hype just annoys me more than a paper cut. Thursday evening though watching LA v San Jose, I noticed something with Beckham. When he scored he seemed like a normal guy, thrilled to death about his goal, his first MLS goal. When Landon scored on the assist from David to see him come running and jump on Landon's back like a kid who just won the state championship, proved something to me. David is a normal guy, taking advantage and making all the money he can, but a guy who just wants to play futbol. So David I am not thrilled about the hype machine associated with you, but I have a new found respect for you. This after seeing him visibly annoyed Saturday night when LA was down 4-0. Vasco thinks that David's lasting impact will be for the fans, when he teaches the players that every game counts. Now if the teams just start taking the US Open cup seriously, but that is another rant entirely.

Predictions MLS post season awards

I got my cue from Ives, and thought I would take a crack at it.

MLS MVP Luciano Emilo, much like last year, Luciano will once again take MLS by storm, how you say. I feel Luciano breaks the season goal scoring record this season and scores forty in all competitions. Can you say two time MLS MVP.

MLS Rookie of the year Julius James will win this, let's face it if Toronto's defense improves, James will get a lot of the credit.

Defender of the year Gonzalo Martinez once again when DC's Defense improves Gonzalo will get a lot of the credit.

Goalkeeper of the year Brad Guzan will win this one once again, why, I think he will be here the entire year, and lead Chivas far in the playoffs. This will be his last year though in MLS.

Coach of the year Juan Carlos Osorio yes this is a tough one, I think the Red Bulls will be improved enough that the award will go his way after what he did in Chicago last year as well.

First Coach fired Colorado is the easy choice, but they are to cheap to do it. He makes it to seasons end. Columbus is the only other real choice for coach on the hot seat, look for them to pull the trigger and finish out the season with the interim coach, when my guess July.

Season Preview 2008

Been working my but off since January, between work and getting my house ready to sell, I haven't had time to even sleep.

My preview isn't as in depth as last year. I believe i got one right last year by place. Did a little better if you just count playoffs. So here goes:

Eastern Conference

DC United will win the supporters shield once again; with the influx of South Americans this team just might win seven trophies this year. Although after Saturday night’s game, the reserve league title seems like a long shot.
Kansas City will be the surprise of the conference with Eddie and his up and down self gone and some south Americans coming to town, KC will be good. Will anyone in KC notice though?
New York with a new coach that turned the fire around last year will be improved enough for third place and a playoff spot.
Toronto will be improved as well, with out the injury bug hitting them this year, I can see the first ever MLS international playoff game in October.
New England lost a few players once again; I just don’t see them being that good this season. The only thing you can be sure about with New England is that they will lose if they get to the finals.
Columbus will they ever be a good team. Is there a new head coach for this team before the end of the year?
Chicago this team came on at the end of the year. Their coach left during the off-season, the guy that turned them around. Blanco won’t help them this year.

Western Conference

Chivas USA will win this conference as long as Brad stays in the USA.
Houston will recover from the loss of two strikers to finish second once again.
FC Dallas will recover from dumping the fish and have a decent season.
Real Salt Lake will have a decent season and make the playoffs for the first time. Why, Freddy is gone and Jason picked up some guys from Argentina.
Colorado will start strong once again, and then just stink the country up come May. A help wanted sign will be up at seasons end for a new coach.
San Jose is back as an expansion team. San Jose will be respectable, 2009 will be when they make their mark.
Los Angeles will stink the joint up once again and David will ask for a transfer back to England after the All-star game. The new coach will leave at mid-season because these Yanks don’t know how to play futbol. Landon and Ruiz will get into a fight during a game, and LA will become the laughing stock of Futbol around the world.

2008 will be another great year for Soccer in the USA, Olympics and more MLS tournaments in play and one already in the books. Soccer in the USA will be Fan-tastic.

DC United

The season starts today with the first workout of 2008. DC will look very different this season with the departure of Troy Perkins off to Europe, Brian Carroll off to Columbus via San Jose, and Bryan Arguez off to Germany, Nicholas Adderly to the USL with Jay Nolly. Greg Vanney possibly leaving as well, no one seems to know. Vasco wishes them all the best.

In coming are Marcello Gallardo, Jose Carvallo, Gonzalo Peralto, Gonzalo Martinez and Franco Neill are on their way or are already here. Which will give United a true South American flavor.
Jamie Moreno sign a new contract at a reduced price, in order to get 2009 guaranteed, which in my opinion is a good thing, Jamie has been in the league since the first year and MLS and DC need to show him some loyalty. The league showing some loyalty to at least a few of the players is a good thing. Hopefully when all is said and done, Jamie can either become a coach or find a place in the FO.

That leads me to the big discussion Christian Gomez the 2006 MLS MVP, three time best eleven selection and the man who helped spark DC United to the 2004 MLS Cup. Now obviously Vasco hasn't been part of the negotiations and is only reading what Goff has told us. Now it is possible that Christian thinks he is worth the reported $600,000 someone in Qatar is offering, we all know they have to over pay. DC United for some reason isn't willing to guarantee 2009 for him, at around $300k or so. Why I do not understand, we know he will be good this year, and we are not killing ourselves if we give him another year, he has earned it. One cup, two shields, one MVP award, while he isn't El Diablo he can be mentioned in the same breath, and who will ever forget the drumming in Giant stadium. It seems like Gomez is getting a raw deal from United. All that being said, if Christian is standing firm on a DP salary, then it is Christian who is screwing himself.

March 11th is first kickoff, in Jamaica, the drive for seven trophies begins today.

While we all celebrate, lets remember Phil O'Donnell the Motherwell captain who passed away this past week on the pitch. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of Mr. O'Donnell in this time of sorrow. RIP

Congratulations to Troy Perkins on his transfer overseas. I have had the privilege of meeting Troy Perkins and Troy is a class individual, and Vasco wishes him the best in with his new team.

Bobby Boswell was traded to the two time defending champion Houston Dynamos. Vasco wishes him the best with his new team. I hope he likes Mexican food, because Houston has some of the best Mexican food I have ever tasted.

To all of us DC United fans let's hope Christian and the team can come to an agreement.

England Euro 2008

Seems everyone is talking about England and them missing Euro 2008. J has a nice article about keepers and the lack of an English keeper in the EPL, over at ussoccerplayers.com.
I don't understand why people in the United States care, unless you are an ex-pat living in the USA now. The EPL doesn't care about the English national team, they aren't hiring English soccer players, and I read a few months back over at World Soccer magazine they aren't even bringing kids out of their academies any more. Lot's of people even think that the EPL isn't the best soccer in the world. How does Lalas look now. What do they expect, your not developing any talent for the national team, the team is going to suck. I myself would not be surprised if they do not qualify for World Cup 10, I honestly expect them to not qualify, just like in 1994.
We all know that the best soccer is coming out of South America, that is why the European teams keep hiring from there. Did you know that there are more American keepers in England, than English keepers. More USA than England, isn't that s shock. MLS is now looking to South America finally for talent, the last two MLS MVP's have come from South America.
It is time to stop thinking of England as the benchmark, everyone knows that it is in South America. Just because they created it, doesn't mean they will dominate it forever. Time for England to change it's tactics and for the FA to start approaching the EPL about their hiring practices. Until then the three lions will be on the outside looking in.

MLS Cup XII

I had the fun of attending MLS Cup on the 18th. I really enjoyed the game, on a rather chilly day at RFK, I was on the shaded side. The Game was good, back and forth. The Revs and Dynamos put on a good show. I was rooting for the Dynamos and very happy to see Dwayne get his second MLS Cup game winning goal. I am always happy to see ex-Kickers do well.
I wasn't impressed with the show that MLS put on, I arrived an hour before the game even started and there was nothing. Honestly nothing there, I parked in the 3rd row, and there wasn't anything to going on outside of the stadium that I saw. Heck DC puts on a good show for the kids before a Saturday game. Once inside the stadium there was nothing either. I checked out the souvenir booths, some decent stuff, but no Houston jerseys, No Lapel pins, Some DC United stuff. I am told MLS hires a company to do this at the all-star game and other big events. While I managed to spend a few bucks, Two things that I and others really wanted were not there.
Enough of that though, what really impressed me was how many people traveled for the game, from New England and damn Houston, and from other parts of the eastern seaboard to watch the CUP game. I talked to several Houstonians who traveled for the game. Several New Englanders who traveled for the game. Who for some reason were impressed that I drove a little over a hundred miles that morning to see the game.
39,800+ in RFK for the game, lots of people from the area, and lots from the mid-Atlantic area, but people flying in from Houston and all of those that traveled from New England for the game.
I have to say that Soccer in America is starting to take hold.
In spite of MLS, Why do I say that? Monday I get home from work looking to read up on the game, I go to my favorite site to see this. One of the best sites out there was denied credentials for the game. I was actually floored by this. My first thought was this is payback for the Hope Solo article from Marc. Now I do not know for sure, but I do know that MLS and US Soccer are like sisters. Who really knows except someone at MLS, but MLS has lost the best coverage of their league. Bill, Ian and J run a great website with several other contributors, Let's hope that MLS doesn't keep shooting themselves in the foot.

MLS Playoffs

For years now people have whined and complained and cried, the regular season doesn't mean anything. I have always differed on that, playoff ranking, supporters shield and actually making the playoffs. Try telling the five teams that didn't make it that the regular season doesn't matter. A few years ago LA won the title with a 13-13-6 record and ninth place during the regular season. This year MLS changed it so that only the top eight make the playoffs.

This year due to injuries seventh place Kansas City takes out Chivas 1-0. Well let's just say that Chivas was undermanned because of injuries. The eight place team Chicago beats DC 3-2 a well earned victory, with a bunker attack mindset. So we are left with the 3rd, 4th, 7th and 8th place teams. NE and KC won 1-0, NE did have a nor'easter to deal with. Houston was tied till OT.

You want to see the best play in your championship game each year. Why isn't this happening in MLS? I have to figure that the amount of extra games in various tournaments has to be part of it. Houston and DC started the season badly I figured because of a Champions Cup hangover. Both teams played in Super Liga, Houston had three home games, DC two. DC had to make another trip to Mexico for the Copa Sudamericana. we won't mention the US Open Cup, since MLS teams don't take it seriously, and don't get me started on that. While Houston is still alive, one could argue thanks to a red card. DC isn't, and Chivas didn't play in any extra tournaments. Maybe it is time to start making some adjustments to the salary cap and the roster for teams like the Supporters shield and MLS Cup winner, to expand the rosters and increasing the salary cap for them.
What will this accomplish, hopefully it will help MLS advance their standing in the international community, and hopefully get the best team advancing to their showcase game.
Houston chased six different trophies this year and is still in the running for one. DC was chasing seven trophies this year and won one. These are your two elite teams in MLS and they have done it with the same system the Real Salt Lake has used. What has RSL accomplished?
What is my argument, that it is time to start adjusting the salary cap and roster size for your teams that are playing in tournaments that will bring MLS stature in the international community.
Champions Cup, Copa Sudamericana and Super Liga are tournaments that need the adjustment. This will hopefully make it possible for MLS to shine in domestic and international play. So if you are playing in these tournaments, Champions Cup, you start training a couple of weeks earlier, and two weeks off during the regular season. A couple of extra weeks of training will help against Mexican teams that we are already close to beating. A couple of extra players will help during the season when Super Liga and Copa Sudamericana games are going on, along with US Open cup games as well.
It is time to make the adjustments, will it cause an unfair advantage for a team to stay at the top. LA didn't make the playoffs this season again. Real Salt Lake defeated both DC and Houston at home this year. Chivas stepped up and is knocking on the door of MLS elite. New England is on it way to finally breaking through with their first ever trophy this year. Dallas keeps finding the room. Who thinks that Chicago and LA won't be there next year. It might but everything is cyclical, teamswill rotate in and out. I don't think it will become the EPL with the big 4 and everyone else.
Next year MLS becomes a teenager, it is time to start reaching out and taking the brass ring.

Major League Soccer

Haven't posted in awhile, so lot's of thoughts.

MLS Playoffs, Three of the lower seeds won 1-0 and the other tied 0-0. you have to wonder where all of the beautiful soccer went. Looks like KC might be the team to pull off the upset thanks to injuries, which is sad, Chivas had a great season. Being the DC fan that I am, I am a little nervous 0-5-1 with no goals scored but I expect DC to win on Thursday evening. I also expect Emilio to win the newcomer and MVP awards this year. Congrats to Guzan and Parkhurst with their awards. Five fouls all year, that is almost impossible to imagine.
I look for DC v NE and Houston v KC in the final four. Hopefully attendance will be much better this weekend. When a Thursday night game takes top honors, when the team got in on Sunday, that is pretty sad.

I predicted that Sigi would be gone already, looks like I was wrong as Columbus picked up his option. LA is still mulling Frank's career in LA, I figure nothing will happen till after the post season tour. Colorado, I have to figure that the Rockies post season run has helped him keep his job. Nothing personal but the team has gotten worse each season you were in charge. I look for him to be replaced before thanksgiving, if not I see a huge revolt from the hard core faithful in Denver.

Greg Ryan has been told that he will not get another run as the Women's NT coach. I know I wrote here earlier that one loss doesn't ruin a coach, but the debacle after the Brasil game was a joke, and I personally hope there is a huge change in the players on the team. Ryan takes the fall, but so should the sorority sisters who led the way as well. America is waiting Kristine and Abby.

Cobi Jones has played his last MLS game and retired, I have to say that I am thrilled that I can say I watched this man play soccer in person, and enjoyed telling my son that that is how you play the game, never give up and always play hard. Cobi is probably the most recognized US soccer player in the world, with a resume that includes VASCO DA GAMA in Brasil. Cobi, Vasco salutes you and your career and wish you the best in your future endeavors. Andrea Canales has a nice tribute to Cobi over on ussoccerplayers.com check it out.

MLS Expansion is in full swing, with San Jose scheduled to be reborn in 08, and the rumors flying high and hard that Seattle will be there as well in 08. I think Seattle would be a great choice, but so would St Louis and the Delaware Valley, that makes seventeen teams. Who will be the last team, Phoenix, San Diego, Cleveland or Atlanta. Or will another MLS team move from one side of the state to the other side and only have sixteen. Will we get an announcement at MLS Cup 2007.

The regular season is almost over, time to start the pool, who is he first coach to go.
Let's start with the Eastern Conference:
DC United - He stays
New England - He stays
New York - Bruce has had a lousy season 11 points in the first 5 games, 3-0-2. then 8-11-4 28
points in the last 23 games. Bruce signed a big contract, he gets to start next year
If they get off to a bad start look for him to be out of work.
Kansas City - Started strong as well, seem to being doing their best to fall out of the playoffs.
Curt's first season, he gets to come back next season.
Chicago - already changed during the season, he will be back.
Toronto - Expansion team, lots of injuries, Mo is back.
Columbus - Looks like a third year without the playoffs. Sigi is looking for a job Oct 22nd
or 23rd in my humble opinion.

Western Conference:
Chivas - He is probably coach of the year, he is back.
Houston - He is back if he wants to be, might want to go back home to NoCal.
FC Dallas - First year coach, he is back.
Real Salt Lake - Jason is back next year.
Colorado - Looking for work Oct 22nd or 23rd.
Los Angeles - This is a tough one, their post season tour will make this a difficult decision. Frank
is a good coach, and the team is lacking in talent. If I had to place a bet, I would bet
on him being back. If LA gets off to a slow start next year, he is out.

So my guess is the pool comes down to Columbus or Colorado, and who schedules the news conference first. If I could place a bet it would be Colorado.

The LA Galaxy are now withing smelling distance of the playoffs. While still in 11th place with 30 points they have a game in hand and a chance at 39 points. Home games with Toronto and New York, and the final game in Chicago. While Chicago has an away game at DC and then the final v LA. Chicago currently has 36 points which will make the final game of the MLS season one for all of the marbles. Of course if LA beat TFC and the Red Bulls, which the way both are playing is likely. After playing like crap all season they put a four game winning streak together and are suddenly back in the playoff hunt. This keeps the MLS detractors in business, but don't worry folks I am sure the Blanco v Beckham finale will be a fantastic game. Why do people Whine about that, the NHL and NBA have over half their teams in the playoffs, no one whines about that? Of course it will help with the off season tours as well. Remember one thing though folks, if LA is losing look for the return of the well timed PK call, that will of course benefit LA. Five points and counting thanks to well timed PK calls. I found this tonight. This article is written on the men's national team website by the executive director of the Men's national team players association. It provides some information that could be considered insider. Although a lot of it is already known by Vasco, because of his work in soccer. So it is tough for me to know what is insider and what is not. Mark has had a interesting relationship with the Fed negotiating contracts for the players. I believe he helped the women in their last contract, but I am not sure so don't quote me.
It is a helluva read, so enjoy. He is dead on with the Ryan style though.

While I know Hope's National team career is over, I hope someone quotes her after every game.

That is two tournaments in a row now that the Brasilian women haven't been able to finish it. The Olympics in 04 they hit the post twice once in OT. They had the better of the play that day against the USA. Today they lose once again to Germany, hitting the post once and missing a PK. They had the better of the play again today. Vasco says not bad for a team that gets together for about nine months before the tournament, and does that for the Olympics and World Cup. The other two years you can't find the team because their federation doesn't support them.
I salute you Brasilian women's national team. Marta, Danielle and the gang. I vote for Marta as player of the year once again for 2007.
It was nice to see my friend Katia make it on the field today, even if it was only for a few minutes. Hopefully your knee is a 100% now.

RFK Stadium

Last night, my son and I went to RFK stadium and watch a tale of two halves. DC played a little rough I thought just missing two real good chances in the first half. I give credit to Toronto for not giving up even though there season is in affect over. There magic number is 1 now. Eliminated today if Columbus defeats LA today. Sigi seems to be able to destroy LA when his teams play them.
Then the second half started and in an 18 minute stand DC put four balls into the back of the net. Two of them were goal of the week quality. Marc Burch just nailed a laser from a nice little back heel from Fred. Then five minutes later Fred had a goal of his own. Nine minutes later Jamie scored on a nice shot for his 111th career MLS goal. Then four minutes later Emilio scored his twentieth of the season off of a fantastic rebound, that was goal of the year quality. I wasn't thrilled that they spent the last twenty minutes passing the ball, but I understand.
Once again it was a fun time at RFK, DC and the fans know how to have a fun time. I have sat by the screaming eagles before and that was fun. Last night we sat by Barra Brava, wow now that is a fun time. My son has declared that he wants to join.
You gotta love this team, and I look forward to watching them once again in their sixth MLS cup in November.
First game of the day my son scores six, and then DC kicks butt, you gotta love a day like that.

Third place

Well unfortunately the USA won today for third place in the World Cup. The strange thing about it was that they actually played soccer today, I was amazed at the difference I saw today compared to the other five games.
I know that a couple of days ago I actually defended Greg on this very blog. I have had a couple to days to reflect and I am in agreement with most of the rest of the world, his contract should be allowed to expire at the end of the year. After watching the team play good flowing soccer today, I actually became mad at how they played EPL style long ball.
Then there is the whole Hope Solo thing. I feel like a lot of people do, the Greg hid behind the team when kicking Hope off of the team. Managing to somehow spin Hope's comments that she was criticizing a teammate was so damn cowardly. You know just like the rest of us the comments were not at Briana they were meant for you, and only you. Greg, according to your stated logic then how was Briana allowed to play in 2007 after her comments about the 2004 keeper? I really do want to know the answer to that one, yes you weren't the head coach, but you were the asst coach. So Greg why?
Women of character, Abby is on TV saying the team is about heart and they have character. All I have to say is that I am glad they are not on my team. In the world that I play in, occasionally someone needs to step up and kick someone in the arse when they need it. If you start crying about it you won't learn from it, thus you will fail in the future.
Speaking of the Future once again it is a Sunday morning and Brasil and Germany are playing for the World Cup final. Time to call my Mom and celebrate that Brasil is once again playing on the biggest stage of them all.

Stupidity

Well after a team meeting Hope Solo has been in effect kicked off of the team. Steven Goff is reporting that after a team meeting Hope will not practice play or even be in the stadium.
Vasco says how freaking pathetic, so in order to punish Hope for her speaking the truth, your going to give up your third place medal. Yes, I said it give up your third place medal, Denmark will win the game tomorrow morning, because of all of this stupidity. What Hope said was in the heat of the moment, and was probably heart felt after being benched by a coach who was trying to think to much. There are quotes in this article from Kristine and Abby basically saying you have to be professional all the time and she has caused us a distraction. Vasco says what the F***, are you here to win the dam game or worry about someone's feelings. Hope wrote on her my space page a heart felt apology to her teammate that she wasn't trying to insult her.
Vasco just thinks this is pathetic and have changed my position on Greg Ryan now, Greg needs to be replaced as well as apparently several players on the team. As for Hope, who is truly a beautiful woman looking at her my space page, I hope she refuses to play for the US team ever again, and goes to Sweden and becomes the best keeper ever. I also hope that Hope comes home and tears up the WUSA. When asked to play for her country again, she repeatedly says I did, and you goofs kicked me off, and hangs up.
So after two years of getting ready for the World Cup the US women have decided to throw it all away. Although one could say that they already did that when they decided to play long ball like they are they are an EPL team. Yes after watching the game against Brasil Thursday evening and the other three games, Greg and his staff needs to go and the team needs to be revamped with new players. Vasco feels that this is the beginning of the end for the US women's national team, why they have to win to be care about by the Federation, and now they won't win a medal ever again.
Now we have to wait for the USSF reaction to this, and I am sure it will be "wait for it" Legendary. Probably in its stupidity.

Hello people. The USA women have been a great team for many years, this has resulted in two World Cups and Two Olympic titles as well. The rest of the world has caught up with the USA women's soccer team. I am sorry but the Brasilian women have shined at this World Cup, and have looked like a team that deserves to be in the World Cup final. The US Women haven't played like a team that deserves it. Today they proved it. The Brasilians were head and shoulders better, and they will prove they are champions on Sunday.
Greg Ryan has been head coach of this team for 52 games now, and this is the first game they have lost. So what is the reaction to this, I found this one.
I also found this quote from Hope Solo:
It was the wrong decision, and I think anybody that knows anything about the game knows that. There's no doubt in my mind I would have made those saves. And the fact of the matter is it's not 2004 anymore. ... It's 2007, and I think you have to live in the present. And you can't live by big names. You can't live in the past. It doesn't matter what somebody did in an Olympic gold medal game in the Olympics three years ago. Now is what matters, and that's what I think.
I honestly feel that Hope is the only person that has the right to be mad at Greg, and my personal feeling is that it would not have mattered anyways. Brasil would have won anyways.
People lets not jump to conclusions here and assume that a coach that has lost once on PK's and once in regulation in 52 games needs to be fired. It isn't always the coach's fault when the team lays an egg. His hunch to change keepers isn't why this team lost, they lost because they faced a better team a team with more pride. He will stay and needs to stay through the Olympics next year. Two thirds, one second and two championships in the World Cup, wouldn't we be thrilled if the men had a record of this! Let's hope they win on Sunday!

Toronto FC

Toronto FC has had a rough season so far. They were 0-4 without a goal to start the season, and are currently in the middle of an 11 game win less streak and 822 minutes without scoring a goal, which is an MLS record. Injuries have been numerous, almost as many as the trades Mo has made. Yesterday being a man up for almost an hour, they were still not able to score. Credit Nick Rimando for that. One of my favorite players Todd Dunivant missed an almost sitter, it appears because he can't shoot with his right foot. This morning in the Toronto Sun it is being reported that Mo has been given a two year extension. While that in it's self isn't that huge, he stated he is already planning a trip to South America after the season. That is great, an Englishman admitting that he needs to go to South America to scout. Let's hope for his sake that he is also smart enough to sign a couple of those South American players. See what a trio of Argentines has done for RSL. I have to admit though what the heck was that Espindola goof thinking yesterday, my guess is he will sit at least 2 games as a result of that red card. Toronto has now went over nine games without a goal, 14 total for the season. Hard to believe that the team has made progress this season. Although last place is where they will finish, not the 2nd place I predicted at the beginning of the season.

Emilio Luciano

Emilio, what an amazing striker. 19 goals in MLS and 24 goals in all competitions. Leader in the race for MLS MVP and MLS newcomer of the year. It just amazing to me that he is basically a journeyman up until this point. Brasil, Germany and Honduras now the United States.
Three times MLS player of the week, Golden boot leader. He has helped restore an attack that has helped bleed over into other players. Christian Gomez the defending MLS MVP has 7 goals and Ben Olsen has 7 goals. Fred another Brasilian has 6 goals and Jamie has 5 goals. A league leading 48 goals for the team and a plus minus of +20.
While it is still rather early, It is sure looking like I will be able to watch my United when I show up on November 18th. By then we will know that DC has won the supporters shield and Luciano has won MVP and the newcomer awards. Looking like we will be playing Chivas.

The nightmare has now occurred, the golden boy David Beckham is hurt once again. This time though it is serious and he will probably miss the rest of the season. Sprained Knee.

Why is this a nightmare, well first reason is the bad pub that MLS is receiving because he was playing on a gimpy ankle. I believe this is a load of crap, He played for Real Madrid on a injured ankle, and crap he went to England and played in a friendly for the entire game on that ankle. If David has a bum ankle then he should be saying, Steve I shouldn't play in this game, or Steve I cannot play the entire game. What European team games are important? You cannot cry that league games are important in Europe, and not anywhere else. David screwed up big time. He can't go to Dallas or Colorado because of his ankle, but he can fly to England with that ankle? David while I believe your ankle is hurt, England games are not more important than MLS games. Vasco has no problems with you playing national team games with England, but not while your hurt, instead of MLS games.

Second MLS will get bad pub, why did most teams raise prices or tied tickets with the Galaxy games to multi games packages, and now are screaming we can't guarantee that anyone will play. Well you advertised and sold the games based on David Beckham being there, now he won't be, and you are saying tough crap in not so many words. It is hard to say greed but it really is, even though these teams aren't making money and want to make some money and they are using David to help raise that money. You can't advertise and sell based on one man and not expect to refund or something if he doesn't play or show. Even if it is because of injury. If you sold the game regular price and single game, then you can say he is hurt we can't do anything. If you raised the price or added it to a package, then you owe your ticket holder something, even if it is making the games promotional nights. You know you have a bunch of promo items in storage somewhere.

Third Alexi Lalas, now I have defended this guy some, but when he came out and cried about the MLS schedule and we won't do this again. Alexi exhibitions against Vancouver and Minnesota, and a Tour of Asia and Australia remember them. Alexi you cannot whine about the MLS schedule and then do the same thing yourself with the exhibition games. Sorry Alexi, I have defended you in the past I can't do that here, and it is time for you to go, the only reason why your having problems is the team you have assembled this year. and the big question here is if you will actually win 4 games this year.

Fourth, while it is annoying to only show David in the highlights of games, there was still soccer highlights on the national news. Fox news was showing them, heck they had a nice piece when LA game to New York. That will not happen now, no free publicity anymore.

Well now we can all put this to bed and move onto the end of the season. I am putting my money on Real Salt Lake on becoming a huge spoiler. Three Argentines and a huge Victory Wednesday evening, RSL looked like an entirely different team. Looking for a huge victory tonight in LA.

Well Freddy wanted to play European soccer. I wonder if he thought about this? After two games in Portugal he has a new coach. Seems a disagreement in the locker room has led to a new coach. Let's hope that this doesn't lead to Freddy riding the pine. This has happened to many accomplished soccer players in the past, Even players that have won the FIFA player of the year award. After a good champions league start and over 50 minutes of playing time, he road the bench in the second game, with the excuse he needed a rest. Over on big soccer the discussion has started once again, is he cap tied to the USA?
Seems like Freddy provokes discussion where ever he is. Let's hope he can at least do it while he is playing on a soccer field, rather than sitting on the bench.

Saturday night

Wow, two amazing highlight goals by Fred and Luciano last night in Columbus for DC. Fred had a rebound blast from outside the box that made everyone say wow. Luciano just made Ezra look silly, just out guessing him and nutmegging the goalie for his league leading 14th goal of the season. I just love these two players and so do my kids. Bought my oldest a Fred jersey and my youngest a Luciano Jersey months ago. My 4 years old when the game is on or highlights, says that is me daddy. I can only hope right now, and to my amazement he knows Luciano by face now too.
How can I not comment on the Red Bull/LA game, 66k in attendance and a national TV audience, saw 9 goals and back and forth play. Pavon, Angel, Altidore each had two and Donovan Buddle and Mathis scored as well. Only three cards and a highly entertaining match with great back and forth action. While I am not a Red Bull fan the right team won. Now if TV news would put highlights of the game on, instead of David we might be happy. At least everyone is learning that soccer is not a one man game.
Tough week for selecting the goal of the week.
Chivas won 2-0 over Toronto, Chicago won 2-0 over Real Salt Lake. Thursday night Colorado surprised New England 3-0

Well the soccer week has been fantastic and strange. The USL 2 playoffs start tonight, Personally I am rooting for Richmond and Harrisburg. Germany and England started up this week. Super Liga semis this week, with Pachua winning and Jekyll and Hyde winning as well, with Mr. Hype scoring his first goal. With all the passer by's professing it to be his first MLS goal. NOT. This is very annoying to those of us who are permanent members of the bandwagon. While I am not in favor of higher ticket prices for one player, it serves the bandwagon people right. MLS don't forget about your bread and butter though! BSPN shows highlights of Beckham and then lets you know that they lost. Thank you Bobby Boswell for pointing out this fact for the world to see. Why is it that LA plays like a decent team in Super Liga and during MLS play like a pickup team and can't score a goal. They have the same amount of victories in Super Liga and in League play. Now we are seeing logical articles that MLS cannot rest on just Beckham they need more players. Vasco's personal opinion how about developing American kids after all we are an American league. I like the rumor of making it a North American league, that will help Toronto, and Vancouver in the future. Which will only make the league stronger.
Landycakes gives up his captains armband to David in an effort to do what? Prove he believes the hype, that he really wants to go play in England. That he really does live up to his nickname. Landon is the only player in the world that could give up a captaincy and no one finds it strange. All Vasco has to say is "What a leader, the USA will not win a world cup while this guy is a leader of our national team". Please Clint, Jose heck even Freddy please step up and take the team.
August and September is a great month anything can happen and there is hope around the world. Come on would you have thought a week ago, that Colorado would have a two game winning streak knowing they were going to play Houston and New England? Would you figure that Houston would be on a two game losing streak when they were going to play Real Salt Lake and Colorado? Ya, I thought so. Would you really think that Fernando would still have a job, I have to figure he makes the season now, but is fired the first day of the off season. DC and Columbus renew their rivalry tonight, let's hope that DC shows up tonight. Copa Americana is coming next month, and I have my MLS Cup tickets, thankfully they came back to the east coast this year.

I honestly cannot think of a person in soccer that is more of an idiot, yes I am talking of Concacaf's very own Jack Warner. I saw this article thanks to my friends at USsoccerplayers.com. Jack Warner has opened his mouth and took a huge shot at the entire country of England. England is an irritant to the entire world of soccer, and they do not deserve to have the World Cup in 2018. While I agree with the World Cup thing, why do you reach out and take a disrespecting shot at England. This will not only get England pissed, but they will get Europe as well, and make it harder for Concacaf to host 2018. What Jack you figure you can't steal enough money if the Cup is in England so let's wage a one man war, for your wallet. You got away with it in 06 with a slap on the wrist, so logic figures you can do it in 18. Please Concacaf figure out a way to get rid of this guy, he is an even bigger embarrassment than Colorado is to MLS. I still am baffled that no one was willing to run against him last year. Please someone in Concacaf get this man out of office, before Concacaf becomes a laughing stock. Jack if you really love futbol, please take the knife and step down from your FIFA position and your Concacaf Position and just watch it on TV. While Vasco is not a fan of England and their futbol, I have no desire to reach out and slap them like you did. Trust me before this is all said and done England and Europe will reach out and slap you and Concacaf back. I will laugh about you, but be upset about Concacaf.

A little late on this, but what the heck is going on in Colorado. Seattle is a good team, but they are a USL team. MLS teams loose to USL teams every year, but dam 5-0. That is a statement that we are better than you. Right now the way the rapids are playing they are rapidly showing that they could be beaten by a college team and maybe by a real good u-19 rec team. Seattle should be the next expansion team in MLS. How is Fernando keeping his job, 11 wins out of the last 41 games. They started off great, new stadium and good play then all of the sudden they just dropped off of the face of the earth. It is time to get rid of Fernando, and heck it should have happened Tuesday evening, before he got on the plane. What an embarrassment to MLS!
How about this, in 2008, MLS trades Colorado for Seattle, and then we will still have 14 teams in the league, at least we know that Seattle will show up and try every night.
What a joke the Western Conference has become with Real Salt Lake, Los Angeles and Colorado. Houston, Dallas and Chivas are good teams, but how can they test themselves when they get to play JV teams. What a huge disappointment.

Youth Soccer

First off a great victory yesterday by my favorite team DC United, a short handed DC went to New England and won 3-0. Luciano had two goals, the second a huge heads up give and go with Ben on the restart. Youth players can look at the play and learn to always keep your head in the game. One of the best ways to learn is to watch, watch and learn was a saying I used to hear a lot.
For awhile now youth soccer clubs around the country have been waiting on the results of this story. Most soccer clubs consider their coaches to be private contractors and give them a 1099 at the end of the year. Well this changes everything, the IRS rules that they are employees, not contractors. The clubs will now have to withhold taxes and pay Social Security taxes, and maybe pay some back taxes. Parents your kids travel/select and ODP fees just went up, because you know they aren't going to be able to lower their salaries.
Then again some parents just might not care, after all it is an investment into that free college education, hopefully. This article shows just how crazy some parents can be, lets face it teenagers are some what unfocused. Some parents are now sending their teen aged athletes to sports psychologists so that they can be better focused in that pursuit of a college education. Can you believe this crap, no wonder this generation is so screwed up, what ever happened to kids growing up and being kids. Playing lots of sports and enjoying life? Now we have play dates and second and third graders choosing what sport they love. Parents paying thousands of dollars a season for their kids to go play a game, hopefully developing into good soccer players, but damn they better be on a winning team too. Soccer isn't the only sport doing it, Parents it is time for kids to be kids again, and gym teachers to be gym teachers, not sports coaches, not training center owners. Kids need to be out in the street or back yard playing the game that they love, whether it is soccer, hockey, basketball, baseball, football or heck even one of the X game sports. Do you want your kids growing up and be a coach, making squat? Not that that is a bad thing.
Parents it is time to come to your senses, and save some money for that college education, and all you have to do there is make them do their homework and study. That was a concept back in the eighties, and it worked for me. After work, I get to go be a coach and enjoy the kids and feel rewarded twice a day. I never have come home annoyed about work after a practice. I always stress to my kids that school work comes first, and then they get to have fun at practice. Yes, I still call it practice.

I am not a huge fan of the man they call Beckham. I have said and still believe he is a decent soccer player but the most over hyped one in the world. This ankle injury thing is really starting to bother me, and the coverage it is getting. Nick Webster wrote an article yesterday suggesting that the injury is worse than we have been told. The team isn't being told how bad he is hurt, and this is causing the Galaxy and MLS to look bad since they are saying it is a sprained ankle.
I have to agree with him, because we are getting articles written like this one by Jamie Trecker basically saying that the injury is threatening the national main stream hype. Heck ESPN is televising the game tonight in Toronto because Beckham might play. Although now it isn't likely, at least we get to see a huge rip roaring crowd in North America and another LA loss. The casual fan who is tuning in to see what this soccer game and Beckham is all about will just turn off the game and have another strike against soccer. Whose fault is this, well MLS of course. Didn't they learn anything 4 years ago with the Adu mistake? I understand Marketing is a huge thing in sports, but maybe it is time to change the marketing people in charge after these two strikes and add in the stagnant attendance, and there is a marketing strikeout. I really don't want to hear anything about David till he steps on a soccer field to play a real game.
Vasco wants to wish Freddy the best of luck in Portgual, I think it was a good choice on his part, and I hope you adapt well, and score early and often. Maturity will help you and I believe Europe will help you find that, and that will only improve your game.

Ordered my MLS Cup tickets Thursday, looking forward to attending my first MLS cup, even if DC is not involved. Believe it or not I think attending a soccer game at RFK is one of the most enjoyable sporting events in the US.

Superliga, wow LA and Dallas played a fantastic 6-5 game. LA jumps out to a 4-0 lead and Dallas made a fantastic come back only to fall short. Most of us can only watch it on the computer. It was well worth it though. Let's hope Houston and DC can put on another fantastic game tomorrow evening. I have to admit I have enjoyed watching these games on the computer, something interesting about it.
MLS Underground is reporting that GOLTV has acquired the rights to South American qualifying. This is fantastic news for soccer fans in America. Hopefully we will get a balanced showing, as well as a lot of Brasil and Argentina for us to watch.
Congrats to Freddy on his new contract with Benifica, I wish him well.
Just dam, what was in the water in Pizza Hut Park, what a game, I would love to watch it again.
LA moves on to the Semi Finals. MLS is 1-1 in the semis. What an exciting game. Let's hope there is more to come in the five games left.

Silly Season cont

Well looks like Freddy listened to Vasco, (LOL). Freddy is leaving for Portugal today to finalize his deal with Benfica, according to the Soccer Insider. Goff has him leaving DC today with the deal being 99% done. Lucky Fred, the weather sucks this morning. Vasco finds this to be a great thing, I look forward to the reports from Portugal updating us on his progress. I hope this means that Freddy has matured enough to play overseas, and not the spoiled little star that we have seen here in the States. Twelve goals in 93 MLS games, while that is twelve more than I have, it isn't the mark of a superstar. Hopefully in the long run he will be able to help take the US to the promised land, he wasn't able to do it in MLS, but hopefully he can on the international level. Hopefully MLS has a percentage of a future sale. Fred will do well, after all he is the only person to ever score hat tricks in the U17 and U20 World Cups.
With all of the silly season rumors I was wondering were Landon was, ya I know but I am not making that joke. We have heard that Alexi is shopping him around MLS. Speculation was he might end up in San Jose. Seems trade happy Lexi doesn't want to go out and acquire another DP slot, or doesn't have a the talent to acquire one. Now it seems Landon might be willing to go overseas once again rather than play in MLS. While I agree the language barrier makes the trip easier, all we heard about before him missing his family and girlfriend. Wouldn't that be the same in England? Why not La Liga in Spain, he knows Spanish, it is a better league. Is the real reason he wants to leave the fact that he isn't the big fish anymore and Chivas doesn't have a DP slot? I wish him the best, because he is better than David, and while it is a business AEG is doing him wrong in my humble opinion.
MLS Underground has an interesting post about the Red Bulls and Bruce Arena, with some rumors as well. Claudio retiring at the end of the year. Basically the article reviews the Red Bulls this season, trades signings and what happened to the team that shot out of the block and looked like the 2007 MLS Champions. According to Underground NY management is scratching their head, and thinking about placing someone over Bruce. Then it asks the question what do you think. I myself think the key is the injury to Wattereus who was amazing to start the season, he hasn't been the same since. Looks to me that Bruce should start looking into those overseas offers once again. Colorado or Los Angeles might be an better option for him though, no language barrier. One has to wonder now how much of the legend that is Bruce Arena really came from Kevin Payne? Yes, I say that knowing about the five NCAA championships, remember Bruce freely admits he wanted to trade El Diablo.
I read a nice article in the current issue of fourfourtwo it talks about how the English have gotten lazy in their youth development. I can't find the article on their website. you can pick up the mag at your local Border's like I did. The article backs up some of what Alexi said in June, and what I have been saying for a couple of years now. The magazine also has a nice Q&A with Ronaldo, where he declares Brasilian ladies as the best and Swedish girls second.

Silly Season

Well it is silly season, the transfer rumors are swirling. DC is looking for an Argentine for the remainder of the season. Sounds ok to me, but I prefer Brasilian. Follow the link to a great Q&A with Kevin Payne by Goff. It appears to me that DC will not sit tight, and want that fifth MLS Cup.
Eddie Johnson has turned down a transfer to the EPL, I have read a few people take shots because of this. I personally feel that Eddie after last season owes KC this season at least. I think it is good that he is staying and giving them that season. That being said, I hope the transfer is available to him in the off season. Then again with all of the open racism in Europe maybe he figures, I will just stay here in the USA. Either way or for whatever reason, Eddie is having a nice season and will probably beat Emilo for the MVP this season. Going overseas isn't a big deal for everyone, some people do not want to do it. Vasco says keep scoring goals and don't worry be happy.
Freddy Adu, wants to go to Portugal, Benfica to be exact but he doesn't like their price. Reports are that Benfica has come to an agreement with MLS, but not with Freddy. Now I have no idea what they are offering Fred, but dam you want to go to Europe and here is the deal, take it man. Portugal is a great choice over the more physical EPL, he will have time to develop and learn. Yes, I said learn, he will learn what Peter was trying to teach him was true, and he should have paid more attention, instead of acting like a teenager. I wish him the best, no one deserves to be locked in at RSL.
The craziest of the rumors is Ronaldo to Chivas, now while that would be great, Vasco say how?
Does anyone remember that trade earlier in the year, Guevera to Chivas and Chivas' DP slot to New York? Ronaldo isn't coming here for $400,000, no matter how much he likes Los Angeles. Miami maybe, what a great Brasilian population down there, but I doubt it. Someday hopefully but this rumor has no legs to it.
I have watched Super Liga the last two nights on my computer through the MLS website. I have to say not a bad job MLS. I thank you, because I like most others know no one with Telefutra. Even Galavision would be a better choice, I actually get that now.

Dallas has surprised me, and our cruising along and scoring some goals at an amazing clip. Hopefully Kenny heals and this could be a team looking at a trip to RFK.
Chivas USA A great home team, not so good on the road. Still in the playoffs if they were held today.
Colorado how could I be so wrong, this team started very well, and now looks like a team that needs a new coach. How can a talented team look so bad.
Los Angeles What can I say that Santino didn't, this team is coming apart and needs a new GM. David will not help them, and they will qualify for the all time most over hyped team in history.
Real Salt Lake wow what a train wreck, finally pulled the plug on their over matched coach. Then they gave the job to a player who retired. This team needs to fold, or fire everyone and start over.

Best Player Maykel Galindo, this Cuban has made a difference. Glad he defected.
Best Team Houston, this team only got better when the Gold Cup started.
Biggest Surprise Real Salt Lake, I thought this would be a year of growth, not a team that could
be beaten by many rec teams. They did beat the Chinese national team.
Craziest Lalas who has become a laughing stock, even though some of what he said is
true. Who is making these trades and can he be stopped, please.
Player to watch for the 2nd half David Beckham it will be interesting to see how he adjusts to a
more physical game and to see if the refs protect him.

Well we have lots of soccer to go, Copa Sudamericana, the US Open cup, and the MLS/Mexican challenge. It should be an enjoyable rest of the summer.

The only one right so far would be Chicago, and their last place non goal scoring, replaced the coach already team.

New England has been pretty steady, and continue to play better than I expected. Mr. Joseph has played well, and has not held out like he hinted that he might.
DC United has recovered from the Concacaf hangover and a 0-3 start to move into second place and look like champions, in the making.
New York started the season like a house on fire going undefeated and not giving up any goals to start the season. Lately though they look like a team on their way to the bottom of the table.
Kansas City started the season off very well, and Eddie's back to back hat tricks set the Americas on fire. Then the Gold Cup and Copa America happened and KC looks like a team with no depth.
Columbus started out lousy, but kept hanging in and tied and lot of games, now all of the sudden they seem like world beaters and would be the eight seed if the playoffs started today.
Toronto started off badly going 0-4 and not scoring a goal, and then they started looking good. Playing well at home, and good on the road, the playoffs are not out of reach.
Chicago started well, and now have basically fallen off of the face of the earth, playing lousy and not scoring goals. Hopefully the new coach can kick some butt and get them playing soccer again.

Best player Luciano Emilo Ten goals the first half of the season, can someone say MVP.
Best Team New England has kept it together after a rough preseason.
Biggest Surprise Ben Olsen's Hat trick against the Red Bulls. Wow, what a day.
Craziest Toronto and their trade happy coach. They are coming around though.
Player to watch for the 2nd half FRED, he seems to be coming around and learning his team.

Copa America 2007

Argentina is bringing it's best team, they are going to win the cup. It has been to long since they won the cup, we are going to do it this year. Argentina kicked butt through out the tournament until the finals. Granted Argentina did play the best of all of the teams throughout the tourney. Argentina looked great, and unstoppable. All of that said, that is why they play the game.

Brasil your 2007 Copa America Champions.

Not a tough hard fought game, a 3-0 butt kicking by a Brasil team that was dissed throughout the tournament. Their best aren't here, they are not playing well. Robinho is the only one playing well. He didn't even score today. The same score from the full strength game at Wembley.
Once again Brasil steps up and shows the World why they are the best in the world. Even through transition they can kick some butt. Congrats to Robinho on earning the Golden Boot. Proud day to be a Brasilian.

Disappointment

What can you say when in the 47th minute you go up 3-0, and end up with a 3-3 tie. Two goals by Luciano to move into a tie for the goal scoring lead with ten, at the half way point of the season. Can you say twenty boys and girls. The other goal came from Fred and two assists from Jamie. Lately Fred and Luciano have become the Brasilian connection, which can only be a good thing for DC. Jamie going down with what looks like a hamstring injury is bad enough, but after he goes out Dallas takes over and ties the game.
I have to say that the game was entertaining and enjoyable to watch, six goals in a game is a fun game. Who is this Toja kid, man did he look like a good attacking player. All that said though when your up 3-0 and end up tieing the game you have to go to the locker room feeling like you lost the game. While Dallas is a good team, you should be able to hold a 3-0 lead in your house. So back to the drawing board, the All-Star game in Thursday, and New York on Sunday. You have to be happy to hear that Angel decided to throw a nasty elbow and will not be there next Sunday. At least we know that DC and Benny always get up for a Red Bull game, and we should be able to see another enjoyable game next Sunday. Hopefully DC collectively will go into the locker room tonight and kick themselves in the ass, after this and the Harrisburg debacle earlier this week some needs too.
Congrats to Mexico on a fine third place showing in the Copa America with a 3-1 victory over Uruguay today. Congrats to Steve Ralston on his 115th career MLS assist, thus becoming the MLS all time assist leader. Hats off to you Steve.

It's all over

The U20 US men's team went down in defeat to Austria. A 2-1 loss in extra time, Jose Altidore was the lone goal scorer for the US and finishes with four on the tournament. The weather was rough, they didn't play well in the second half. I just got ESPNU on my cable system so I was able to watch many of the games. I watched today's game while I unpacked. I have to say I am disappointed with the loss, I like most thought they were the favorite.
All in all though I have to say I am pleased with the tournament, I thought they played well in most of the games. They were able to come from behind against Uruguay, beat the crap out of Poland and beat Brasil. Jose, Danny, Freddy and Michael played very well, and the rumors are abound about the first three and Europe calling.
I have to say that I am left with the feeling that this is a step forward for the US and leaves me looking to see if these three can be blended into the senior team for the up coming qualifying cycle for South Africa.
Interesting summer so far, repeat champions of the Gold Cup, laid an egg in the Copa America, and a step forward in the u20 World Cup. We still have the Women's World Cup coming later this summer.

Hype machine

Well it is finally here, David and his hype machine have arrived. Now that he is here in the States he has a new partner in the hype machine, US Soccer. Now I have said it before that David is the most over hyped soccer player in the world today. Heck they even have the immortal Pele commenting on whether David can finish the job that Pele started. I thought it was funny that Pele commented that David had to win. Since our most over hyped team in the US can't seem to win a game without some help from our over hyped ref Brian Hall.
Bottom line is David coming to America will put a spotlight on soccer and MLS. It has helped give Lalas a place to talk and point out that MLS isn't that bad, and speak that truth that the EPL is over rated. Will it help, yes I believe it will help. Some kids will start playing soccer because of all of this and become fans of the game. Probably some kids will buy a Galaxy jersey which is the goal of AEG. Will we start having 50,000 people showing up for MLS games on a regular basis, I doubt it. I am interested to see what the TV ratings do.
Freddy Adu, the most over hyped American soccer player of all time. Freddy has been playing well at the U20 World Cup, and we are hearing of teams wanting to purchase his rights. Celtic and Parma have been two teams that have been rumored to be preparing offers. I can see Celtic wanting him, Freddy had the best game of his season last year in the game against Celtic at RFK. I am reading the bloggers taking shots and suggesting that some of this is made up. I think that this time we leave Freddie alone and enjoy his play. After all if we want to take shots at a hype machine the biggest and best in the world today just arrived in LA, and we can all have fun with that soon enough. I do find it interesting that so far I seem to be the only one willing to take shots though.
Go Freddy, Danny and Jose, beat Austria today and advance to the Semi-finals. This will help get you all to Europe if that is what you want to do.

Well the upset bug bit DC United, the Harrisburg Islanders beat DC 1-0 on Wednesday evening. From the report Goff wrote the first team didn't play, but DC has played their reserves in enough first team games that they should have put a whooping on this team. The US Open cup deserves better than they get from MLS, and I hope DC is embarrassed enough that they come out and kick some butt on Saturday night. Harrisburg deserved the Victory and congrats to them.
MLS really needs to start taking the US Open Cup more seriously, with adjusting schedules, or just plain ordering the teams to put better sides out there. The Cup is named after Lamar Hunt for all of the service and money that this man gave to US soccer, MLS needs to show better in his honor/memory. MLS wouldn't be around without Lamar, and the League owes it to one of their founding fathers and benefactors. Remember he owned three teams at one point, to help keep the league alive here in the USA. My friend Bill Urban has another take on the Cup and you can follow the link to read it over at the US Soccer players web site. While I like his idea SUM and MLS will never do it, imagine Rochester or Richmond playing in Interliga because some MLS team didn't take the Open Cup seriously.
Is it just me or does Houston just love playing on Thursday night on ESPN. Last night they won again 4-0 over a Fire team that is looking real terrible. The way they have looked recently, they are not going to advance to play Richmond in the US Open Cup. I hope the kids are watching these Thursday night games because the Dynamo's are putting on clinics. Let's go Railhawks an expansion USL1 side, who are having decent first year at 4-5-7 so far. Look for the upset by them over the Fire this weekend. Look for a big game from former MLSer Chris Carrieri, who likes to step up in big games. Houston is also just 76 minutes away from breaking the shutout streak that Kansas City set in 2000, Houston gets their shot Sunday at home against Toronto. Right now they are at 605 minutes and counting.
Big weekend for Soccer, the finals of the Copa America on Sunday, I am looking for Brasil to step up and beat Argentina. When these two teams meet you can throw out the records. The US women have a friendly with Norway. The US U-20 play Saturday afternoon in the Quarterfinals against Austria, in the U20 World Cup. I have never been a fan of Freddy's but he has looked great in this tournament. Of course DC United v Dallas Saturday night, this will be the halfway point of the season for DC. Congratulations to the Richmond Kickers on their 1-0 victory over the Galaxy. Richmond the defending USL2 champions beat the Galaxy at home tonight to advance to the next round of the US Open Cup. A very well deserved victory for the boys in black and red.

The Kickers are a class organization and showed it tonight with a deserved victory of the fast becoming laughing stock of MLS. OK, Real Salt Lake is still around. Wonder what Lalas will have to say now. I have to start thinking that Yallop is close to becoming unemployed soon, maybe even faster than Clavijo.

Looking up

While the B/C team flopped in South America, our youngsters in Canada are looking good. While I was not able to watch the game, driving to Virginia Friday night, so that I could finally complete the move. My wife kept me updated, and thanks to Goff, and the ten minute highlight clip he posted from the tube. I was very impressed with the victory. Anytime you can beat a Brasilian team it is something to celebrate. Even if this Brasilian team hasn't impressed. Jose and Fred have looked good, and I am looking forward to watching them beat Uruguay tomorrow evening. Danny has looked good to, I hope that all three of them can go abroad if that is what they want to do.
DC didn't look great on Sunday, I missed some of the game, these things will happen against a good team, DC made them look bad in DC on Memorial day weekend.
Today is the biggest of the Open Cup dates with 4 games tonight and DC United tomorrow evening. I really enjoy when the USL teams can step up and beat the MLS teams, guess it is the underdog mentality. One game going so far and Richmond, my USL team is winning 1-0 at the half. Dallas had to go to PK's last night to advance past Atlanta. I always enjoyed going every year in Richmond to see a MLS team, the Open Cup is a fantastic tournament in the US. I wish the tournament got more TV time in the US. Fox soccer or Goltv could do it.
I look forward to a even better week of Soccer with the semi and finals of the Copa, and the U-20 tournament, and following along with the US open cup games.

Copa America 2007

So what have we learned by losing all three games by a total score of 8-2. Not much I believe, we managed to look silly against South American teams. We are taking moral victories by saying we hung with Argentina and Paraguay for 65 minutes. The announcers are saying that the US earned respect. I ask how did we earn respect by only playing 65 minutes a game and huge lapses in concentration that cost us huge.
I honestly believe we learned two things, one the US has no depth right now. the second thing we learned was that Ben Olsen still has the fire in his belly, and can hang on the international level.
The worst thing that we learned today was that CONMEBOL is a little PO'd that the US dissed their competition and brought a B/C team to South America. While I know the US brings US TV money with them, does South America reconsider next Copa America. Let's hope so for CONMEBOL's sake. These three games have set the US back, right now you have to call the USA a big fish in a little pond.
The South America deserved better and so did the US soccer fan. If this was any other country in the world Bob Bradley would be replaced and he would apologize to the country. We are not there yet, as a Soccer Nation both on and off the field.
Just ten days ago we were all happy the US won the Gold Cup, I hope Landon was happy scoring to questionable PK's last night.
This tournament was even worse than the World Cup performance of last year.

All is Right in the Heavens

Once again everything is all right in the heavens and DC United is in first place, where they belong. After the first three games we were all worried, but now ten games later we are in first place. It's like Karma forgot where DC was and stopped in NY, and now it has traveled down 95 and found his house, RFK.
Luciano and Fred connected once again, and dam Luciano is just amazing. I have to figure that Emilio has figured it out now, and is just deadly inside the box again. Fred as also has seemed to figure out MLS and his teammates now, and when that announcement is made in November will it be Emilio and Fred 1-2 in the MVP voting.
Rough game today, but a noon game in KC 100 degrees, what was MLS thinking. Did you just want an ugly game? Big thumbs up to Troy Perkins without him today, I would be writing about a huge DC loss today. Troy just reminded us today that he is defending Goalkeeper of the year, and would like it again in 2007.
It was bound to happen with all of the off season moves that it would take awhile for DC to come together this season, It looks to me like it is starting to come together. DC has three trophies to win first though, The US Open Cup and the US/Mexican challenge and Copa Sudamericana.
Houston is next on the list.
For now it is Brasil v Ecuador in the Copa America, and just in case, USA was basically eliminated from the competition thanks to Mexico today. So naturally that means the US will kick a little but tomorrow with nothing on the line.

USA on two Fronts

First the bad news the Copa Americana. So far the USA is down 8-2 with a 5-1 loss to Argentina and a 3-1 loss to Paraguay. The scary thing about watching these two games is the total lack of concentration that we are seeing from the defense. Amazing to me how bad the team plays after Ben Olsen is subbed out of the game. Some of the goals given up are Christmas comes early type of goals. The finishing that we are seeing on the field just plain sucks. Ricardo's goal was sweet, the other goal was a PK. To me the only thing learned so far from the tournament is that the USA has a long way to go before we have any depth, and Ben Olsen is just amazing to me, before the injury he was the future of American soccer, he will never be that again, but I think he will be there in 2010. He can teach the kids what it means to have the honor to wear the USA jersey.

Second the U-20 world cup, inconsistency is my best description so far. Lousy game against Korea and a lucky tie. Then against Poland, a team that beat Brasil last time out we get a 6-1 but kicking by the USA. A Hat Trick from Freddy, and two from Danny, and another from Jose. What a display by the USA. Maybe Freddy and Danny will get the call from Europe after all, and MLS will hopefully make a nice piece of change in the process. All of that said, Let's see how Friday night goes against Brasil and the Duck.

The US needs finishers, take a peak at the nice article by my friend Bill Urban. While I do not agree with him 100% there is a lot to what he writes. How many chances has Taylor missed and he is still out there getting chance number 50 to impress. EJ came onto the scene with a huge bang, and just died and he is back out there getting another chance. Defenders who are giving up huge goals because of a lack of concentration and are getting a second chance. Do you think that happens in Brasil? Do you think that happens in club futbol in Spain?
Till the US gets that kind of depth, and kind of mentality the US will not succeed outside of Concacaf. Here is hoping Bob takes us to that level, if not him maybe Benny can do it. Till then keep enjoying the Brasilians, the Duck is on the way.

I am Back

Very little in the posting over the last three months. I have been in the process of moving from Virginia to Delaware. I had little access to the Internet and when I did it was dial up. I also had limited access to soccer in general, I missed the entire Gold Cup, nice to hear that the US played well in the final and won the Cup. Even missed a couple of DC United games, and that doesn't happen much, but it appears that missing the Real game was a godsend.
Nice to hear that I am not the only one who shares these feelings. Alexi has them too, while I know he is trying to hype his over rated team. What he says has more truth to it than most would like to admit. Wish he would have mentioned the English national team as well.
Good luck to the Americans in South America, looks like it is going to be a fun tournament from the first three games, and Mexico with two very quick goals on Brazil. Look for my man Benny to have a huge tournament.
Nice to see Dominic is back with United. Interesting to me that RSL finally wins a game when Freddy isn't there. Could that mean something?

Gold Cup

The Gold Cup is underway, and the US and Mexico have not looked good so far. Yes the US is undefeated, while Mexico is not. Neither of the Concacaf powers have looked good since the World Cup. Could it be that the other members of Concacaf have have risen in talent, skill and ability? Yes, when it is all finished it could end up being USA v Mexico in the championship game, but the group stages are showing me something.
Could it be the Major League Soccer while helping the US national team, has really helped the other members of Concacaf rise as well. Could it be all of the Central American players that are playing in MLS, are benefiting from the rise in the level of play that MLS is displaying. Could all of the national team games being playing in the US for the money in turn be benefiting those national teams as well. Helping upgrade the facilities and fields in those central American countries.
Could it be that while all of this is happening the American soccer fan is the one that benefits and eventually Concacaf as a whole when a Concacaf team hoists the World Cup trophy. I think it a great thing for all of us, maybe someday people won't always see Europe as the best, since they aren't. Let's just pray it isn't Mexico hoisting the trophy.

Well Benny worked his arse off Sunday, well let's face it he always works his arse off for United. Man oh Man was DC United, the Fans and Benny were very rewarded on Sunday. Can you say HAT TRICK, his first ever professional hat trick. The first goal was a trademark hard working goal, and his second was good as well, but the Third goal was a truly fantastic goal, and I hope you all vote for it as the goal of the week.
I have said it before Benny is a great guy, I happen to know some of the stuff he does for kids without the spotlight on. The best part of the goal to me was that it truly looked like Jamie was waiting for Ben to get in range before delivering the pass, like he knew the game was won, and lets give Benny his shot at the Hat Trick, and WOW Benny delivered.
Truly well deserved Hat Trick, by the heart and soul of DC United.

Well the Galaxy lost again and our now 1-4-3. Can it be the USA has now joined the great hype machine. The Kings for years had great players and could never win, are the Galaxy approaching that now. Yes I know they have two championships. The Galaxy are now scheduled for all of these exhibitions and don't forget their tour of Asia and Canada post season. Will people really want to come see them, of course as long as David Beckham is there. So basically now after 10 games this season and only two victories (us open cup and exhibitions) we now have the most over hyped team in the world. So now we will have the most over hyped team in the world with the most over hyped player in the world today. That being said, David showed a lot of guts yesterday after being hurt to keep going and help get Madrid back to a tie, and stay atop of the Spanish table. I was impressed watching the game with his guts.
That being said, will this help make US residents fans of soccer, I do not think so. No one is going to keep watching the Galaxy when all they do is lose, and having trouble scoring to boot. My personal feeling is that this is a train wreck, no not that the team will go under. They will thrive financially, I really feel that the Galaxy will soon become a laughing stock, much like RSL is right now. Amazing to me from a once proud franchise.
