What a game on Sunday, the USA played a fantastic first half on Sunday, and then crumbled in the second half. Vasco has taken lots of flak for rooting for heritage rather than where I live, including insults and a serious infraction bestowed on me at big soccer. Vasco still believes that it was best the US didn't win, because I believe US soccer is doing it wrong and winning Sunday would have set back the US for a generation. You would only know that if you work at the lower end of the ladder.

The US Open Cup third round starts tonight, and ends tomorrow night, and Vasco thought he would take a few predictions to go with it, after going 6-2-1 last week, missing the US/Spain game and LA winning.

Harrisburg on the road at New England, NE lots of injuries, and Harrisburg is bad on the road tough call on this game. With all of the injuries, Vasco sees a Harrisburg upset.
DC over Ocean City NJ Barons, the last remaining PDL team.
Wilmington at home over Chicago.
Columbus at Rochester, Rochester has only played two home games this year without a win. Columbus rolls.
Charleston at home will win versus Chivas
Austin at Houston, Houston doesn't play well in the open cup. Austin an expansion team this is their biggest game ever. Houston rolls

Soccer in the United States, a growing majority. I am still fascinated with the number of people drinking the USSF kool aid, and handing over their money.

SUM is doing the Super Liga again, a mini tournament between Mexico and MLS. The lesser rans of last years league tournament, Some of the games are good, as long as you don't think the tournament is awesome, then you should be good.

United States Men's national team, let's face it boys and girls we can smell the stink they are leaving in Africa all the way back here in the states. Vasco wonders why the fans get up in arms when the US stinks up a tournament? My guess, the Kool aid, because lets face it, the US isn't that good.

The US cannot play with the big boys, of Europe and South America. What has the US done since 2002. Nothing, 1 point in 06. we match New Zealand.

Let's face it, for the US to become a soccer nation, things must change. First people must be fans, just because people play doesn't make them fans. When the country becomes fans, then the players will get better. Then the United States might be able to start hanging with the big boys.

Sunil, it is time to change the USSF plans, ideas. Quit robbing the US of the ability to enjoy the beautiful game. After all ESPN gets it, USA v Egypt on the Deuce, while the Brasil v Italy game is on the original 2pm today.

While the US looks for a new coach, and what plan they can drop millions down the drain on, after another failure. Brasil will be celebrating another FIFA trophy, cause that is what we do.

MLS Week 14

After a couple of lousy weeks, Vasco went 7-1-0 last week. Vasco has had a rotten week so far, and probably the worst birthday of my life. At least Brasil won this week, and will win tomorrow as well. Maybe someone in US Soccer will wake up some day.

Tonight, we get DC United vs Seattle in Seattle, on ESPN 2 at 10:30pm, some of us have to work you know. Vasco sees a tight game, that will end in a tie.

Saturday we have five more games to finish off the week.
LA at San Jose on ESPN2, yes two games this week 4:30 start time. San Jose showed a little last week, and LA didn't, lets go with San Jose.
Seattle at NY, not good for Seattle to travel across the nation after the playing Wednesday, NY while terrible, will win this one.
Columbus at Dallas, Columbus is on a roll on FSC.
RSL at Houston, Houston on a major roll and at home. Houston all the way.
DC at Colorado, DC doesn't play well at mile high, Christian will be out to show up Colorado, Vasco sees a DC win here.

Chicago at DC, both soccer teams, Redstars v Freedom too, at RFK. DC wins this one to give Chicago their first road loss.
Toronto over NY, after all NY hasn't scored on the raod yet.
Houston at Dallas on FSC, Houston wins this rough game.
New England at Kansas City, Kansas City wins this one.
San Jose at Seattle, Seattle breaks out of their funk.
RSL at LA, LA won't win two in a row, but RSL can't win on the road, can you say tie.

Vasco wanted to do Power rankings this year, but didn't want to start at the beginning of the season, week seven is in the books now, and Vasco is debuting his MLS Power Rankings.
Vasco is thinking though that this will not be a weekly event.

# 1 Chivas is the class of the league so far, 6-1-1
# 2 Seattle is the biggest surprise so far, 4-2-1
Do they know they are an expansion team
#3 DC United is back from the brink 3-1-3
#4 Chicago is still undefeated at 2-0-5
#5 Toronto is still up and down at 3-2-3
#6 Colorado is surprising some at 3-2-2
#7 Real Salt Lake is great at home 3-3-0
#8 Kansas City is a good home team 3-3-1
#9 Houston is a slow starter at 2-2-2

Think what you want, I know they are different than some others, who are doing them. This is Vasco's thoughts and we shall see. 52 games in the books so far this year, 17 ties so far, a rounded 33%, that really needs to improve. To many teams playing for a tie, look at the WPS the women don't play for ties they play hard till the final whistle.

MLS week 7

Week seven brings us seven games to watch and ponder. Last week, Vasco was 6-2-2, only losing with Toronto's two home game victories. Toronto is good at home, Vasco has learned his lesson. So Vasco is 22-10-14 on the year so far, not so bad, but not great either.

Congrats to Seattle with a 4-1 pasting of Real Salt Lake in the US Open play in game, and NY beating San Jose last night 2-1.

Vasco is starting to get warm like the weather, so look forward to watching the games in person or on TV. Vasco says to Comcast be serious Hockey over Soccer, remember when Soccer was the flagship. I am a huge Penguins fan, but Vasco would rather watch DC play.

Toronto needs a new heach coach

It has finally come to this, US Soccer and their insane officiating have driven a coach to quit in the middle of a season and probably leave the continent. John Carver has up and quit after abdicating the bench Wednesday evening, after being fined for having a go at the refs, after what he thought was a poorly officiated game.

Sunil, Vasco is calling you out, maybe it is time to start upgrading the consistency of your refs, so that us coaches who work our butts off to prepare a team, don't have to get high blood pressure because of a bad call, perceived or not. This isn't an amateur game at this level, yes at the games with soccer moms, we shouldn't yell at the refs they are learning, but at the MLS level it can cost a coach their lively hood, and the players, fans and coaches deserve better than what they are getting. Sunil, you are the president get to work, and make us proud, finally.

Well a 2-2-3 week, sends Vasco to 16-8-12 on the season.
The last week of the month gives us nine games this week, Houston has the bye week, and four teams play twice this week, and a bonus US Open cup play in game too, between Dallas and the defending champion DC United.

What can I say, Seattle is the real deal. The team plays well together the defense looks good and the offense looks good too. Lets hope the Freddy distraction ends soon. What is wrong with Columbus and Houston?

European failure

Sven the great European coach, coach of England, and Man City, came to little ole Concacaf, and took the reins of Mexico. Amazingly he was a complete failure, and I thought all Europeans were so futbol great. Little ole Concacaf can't hold Europe' s jock. Let' s face it Mexico is in shambles, they were in bad shape before Sven, but he has left them in shambles, and now the USA is the class of the region. Don't forget about Costa Rica, but they did lose to Mexico last week.
Let's celebrate another European failure on our continent, while Sven doesn't represent the whole continent, his Swedish heritage and English coaching, make it even sweeter now that he is a failure in little ole Concacaf.

Seattle Sounders play at Toronto today at 4pm on FSC. Looks like they will be without Freddy Montero, sadly there appears to be allegations of a sexual assault against him. A lady called the police and said she thought he was stalking her, and she was afraid because he assaulted her on March 22, and now reports that he did it on the 15th as well. Police have determined he wasn't stalking her, just attending a high school soccer game. Vasco has read the news articles and the story sounds weird to Vasco. Assault two weeks in a row??? Vasco doesn't want to make lite of it but it sounds weird. Let's hope that the police can bring this to a conclusion this week, so that everyone can move on. The Seattle fans, MLS fans, and Freddy, if there is evidence charge him and try him, if there isn't, then let get back to thrilling the fans.
Sadly enough athletes have assaulted women, and sadly enough false accusations for money have occurred to make the public doubtful, both must change.

On a personal note this is Vasco's 100 post ever for this blog, didn't post a whole lot last year due to circumstances, but will be more active in 09. Congrats to Robbie Finley and his hat trick Thursday night. congrats to Jose Altidore with his hat trick Wednesday evening, now maybe just maybe he can get playing time in Europe. After all we all know Concacaf is better than Europe, Sven proved it.

MLS week 3

Well the USA face Trinidad tonight. Should be an easy victory tonight, but then so should last Saturday night.
Another 4-1-2 week, to close out March 8-2-4.
MLS starts off this week on Thursday evening, Vasco so enjoys a good Thursday night game, Columbus at RSL should be a good game. Columbus is fit to be tied, and RSL's home opener.
RSL wins this one in the cold mountains of Utah.
Saturday, Seattle travels to Toronto which should tells us how good the Sounders really are.
Vasco says they are good, but lose this one in a really good game, glad it is on FSC 4pm est.
New England over Dallas, FC looks so week this year.
DC United over Houston, Emilo scores in bunches.
Colorado over Los Angles, the Galaxy still look week.

Womens Professional Soccer

Today is the day Womens Professional Soccer Part deux. The Washington Freedom are here again to help kick off the league against the Los Angles Sol. Like we talked in other posts, the Freedom won the first ever WUSA game 1-0 vs the Bay Area Cyberrays.

I thought I might look back a little with the WUSA, First season the best record and the champions were the Cyberrays, the second season the Carolina Courage had the best record and they were the champs as well. the third season Atlanta had the best record and the Freedom were the champions. The Freedom and the Boston Breakers have the same name and logo as before, and the little known fact is that the Freedom never really went away, they have been playing in the USL women's division for all of these years. The Atlanta Beat were the best overall team in the three years of the league reaching the championship game twice and making the playoffs all four years.

This new league has a really messed up playoff system. The season champion gets a bye to the championship game and it is at home, while the 2nd place team plays the 5th place team, and the 3rd and 4th place team play each other, the winners playing against each other for the right to get to the championship game. Think the top team will have issues winning the game after a month off, Vasco thinks so.

Vasco thinks that the Sky Blue, Freedom or the FC Gold Pride would have to be the front runners with their ties to the second level professional soccer leagues. The Sol have the best womens player in the World today, so you can't count them out. St Louis has Hope Solo, so you have to think they could be a playoff team. Chicago seems to be the most organized, and Boston has Kristine Lilly. Vasco looks for the games to be competitive and great for the youngsters to watch and learn.

Last week 4-1-2, not bad for an opening week. We move into week two and the debut of RSL. Six games Saturday and one on Sunday, so lets start with Sunday:
Chivas over Dallas. Dallas seems week this year, Chivas doesn't look much better.

Marta keeps the streak going, Pretina scored the PK in the Freedoms 1-0 win over the Cyberrays. Cyberrays got the trophy that first year though. Vasco loves his Brasilian girls.

Spring is in the Air, and so is MLS

Major League Soccer and the Seattle Sounders, got the season off to a fine start this week. Vancouver granted an expansion franchise, The Seattle dominates and destroys the expansion team from NY, ok sorry, but they played like one. Then Friday Don goes down the road and awards another expansion franchise for Portland. Eight teen teams and counting now. Philadelphia starts next year then Vancouver and Portland in 2011.
The only thing better that could happen to MLS is David stays in Italy,oh ya, that is happening. They received money for Davy boy to stay away, this is awesome. Drew Carey made the rounds and called LA an expansion team. Didn't realize Drew was that up to date on his soccer. Finally a celebrity that loves soccer, and has put his money where is mouth is. Gotta love it.

Well my predictions last year sucked to put it mildly, so I am not going to make detailed descriptions. Playoff teams from the west, RSL, Houston and Seattle. From the east, Columbus, NY, DC, Chicago and Toronto. Finals Columbus and DC. I really think bringing Christian back will work, better than all five of those Argentinians combined. Yes I see DC coming out of the West as the 5th place team. I see a slow start and coming on in October. Columbus will be able to pick up where they left off year. The winner, one for the thumb.

Freddy Montero just might be the steal of the off season, although hard to argue with Kasey Keller as well. Look for Emilio to resurface again this year, although twelve goals isn't bad, now that he will be getting some service once again from Christian, and defenses will have to worry about the DC offense again.

Bennie is back, Vasco wishes the new dad a wonderful 2009 season, MLS best eleven, and another hat trick against NY this year. Last year proved you are United's MVP and the reason why you are the only non Brasilian that I have a jersey of. I see a coaching career in your future, but let's not make it to soon, next decade would be fine.

Now if the Philadelphia franchise would just announce the crummy name they are going to go with, maybe I could add to my MLS jersey collection. Vasco is tired of the AC, FC, crap this is America we have brains, oh wait we elected Obama as president, maybe we don't. Americans like nicknames, and AC, FC don't work. Do you want to make this a soccer nation, or just service the hard core fans? Just my opinion. Lets go see United play, or lets go see FC play, which one works for you?

Enjoy tonight's FSC doubleheader, I know I will, and tomorrow a DC win, and Jamie becomes the first 100/100 man in MLS history. 99 assists and counting. Probably the finest player to ever play in MLS, no disrespect El Diablo, Jamie has been part of all twelve trophies that DC has won. I love the Trophy case section on the new DC United website.

Enjoy the season, and remember give the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup some respect, MLS and the fans. Without Lamar Hunt we wouldn't have a league in this country, no disrespect USL, I do enjoy watching your teams as well. Watching an Open Cup game at the lower levels is an exciting game, MLS needs to start showing the Trophy the respect it deserves.

Seattle, a good start to the season, and a goal in their first game.
Los Angeles, paper work to transfer David to Italy and for Landon Paperwork to transfer to Germany.
Real Salt Lake, some goals to go with the decent defense.
Colorado, some sense to the coach, Christian Gomez is a game breaker.
Chivas, some more fans, after all they are the best team in Los Angeles.
Houston, The Concacaf championship early.
FC Dallas, the ability to make Kenny Cooper a DP, after all he deserves it.

Tomorrow is the finals for 2008 for MLS soccer. Columbus the supporters shield winner vs the Energy Drink and the under 500 eighth place team.
NY has been playing well during the playoff, but hopefully Columbus shows it's dominance in 2008 and win its first supporters shield. Columbus was the best team this year, and deserves it's first Cup. All that said it is nice to see two teams that have never been there before.

LA Circus, Landon has a loan agreement, Landon doesn't have a loan agreement. Please LA a circus isn't good for any team. You have a good coach, he will build a decent team, let them both go. David wasn't nice having you around, Landon go finally prove to all of us that yes you can be the best. It is the only way you will cement your legacy in US soccer. There are to many doubters and this is the only way to shut them down. Vasco is included in those doubters, and would love to see himself proven wrong. I would love to see a 2010 final USA v Brasil with Landon leading the way. To quote Ric Flair, to be the man you have to beat the man, and playing along side that motley crew of a team, isn't improving your skill at all.

The nightmare is over DC United signed a handful of South Americans this year, and even Vasco thought is was a great idea. Turns out it wasn't, Gallardo was an excellent player when he wasn't hurt. Problem is he was hurt more often than not. The defenders were lousy, and the new goalkeeper stunk, he isn't South American. Let's hope that this off season is better than last. They decided to keep Tommy on as coach, let's all hope that wasn't the wrong decision, Vasco thinks it is. Defense has to be a priority, and with a twenty man senior roster this year, hopefully a better showing in the CONCACAF championship in the up coming year for a proud team. Another year like this one and the sentence will change to once proud team.
